Topic sentences are essential components in both the IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training Writing tasks. They play a key role in showing your language skills and your ability to organize and present ideas clearly. In this article, IDP will help you understand what a topic sentence is and how to write one effectively in IELTS Writing.

1. What Is a Topic Sentence?

A topic sentence is typically the first sentence of a paragraph. It presents the main idea of the paragraph and helps guide the reader through your argument or explanation. A well-written topic sentence should clearly communicate two things: the subject of the paragraph and the direction or focus of the content.

Topic Sentence Structure:

Topic Sentence = Subject + Main Idea

The subject introduces what the paragraph will discuss, while the main idea outlines how the paragraph will develop that subject. Your topic sentence should be broad enough to capture the overall point but not too detailed. Avoid presenting too much information in one sentence. This allows readers to easily follow the flow of ideas from the thesis statement to the supporting arguments.

2. Common Topic Sentence Structures for IELTS Writing Task Types

Causes and Solutions Essays

For questions like:

  • Why is this happening?

  • What can be done to solve this problem?

You can use topic sentence templates like:

  • Body 1: To begin with, [the topic] is attributed to various factors.

  • Body 2: Fortunately, there are a number of viable solutions to help deal with the problem of [the topic].

Advantages and Disadvantages Essays

For questions such as:

  • Is this a positive or negative development?

You can use:

  • Body 1: On the one hand, [the topic] can be disadvantageous/advantageous in certain aspects.

  • Body 2: On the other hand, [the topic] is a positive/negative development for various reasons.

For questions like:

  • Do the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

You can write:

  • Body 1: On the one hand, [the topic] may bring about a number of beneficial/detrimental effects.

  • Body 2: On the other hand, I claim that the disadvantages/advantages of [the topic] are greater due to many reasons.

Discuss Both Views Essays

For questions like:

  • Discuss both these views and give your own opinion.

Suggested topic sentences:

  • Body 1: On the one hand, there are some reasons why people hold the belief that [first opinion].

  • Body 2: On the other hand, others support the view that [second opinion].

3. Common Mistakes When Writing Topic Sentences

Here are some frequent mistakes IELTS candidates make during practice:

  • Writing a topic sentence that does not summarize the main idea of the paragraph.

  • Failing to mention the central issue of the essay in the topic sentence.

  • Not linking the topic sentence back to the thesis statement or overall opinion.

4. Sample Topic Sentences

Sample Task Prompt:

"Some people think that children must be given homework every day to be successful at school. Others think they should be allowed to enjoy their leisure time after school without homework. Discuss both views and give your opinion."

Examples of Topic Sentences:

  • There are two advantages of assigning homework to children. → This introduces the idea of assigning homework and signals that two benefits will be discussed.

  • Firstly, the added work is arguably an unnecessary source of pressure for young learners. → This topic sentence introduces the first drawback of homework, indicating a more detailed discussion to follow.

  • Secondly, the repetition of homework could be counterproductive. → This introduces another disadvantage, setting up the next supporting paragraph.
