1. Overview of Sentence Completion in IELTS Listening
Sentence Completion is one of the most common and important question types in the IELTS Listening test. You can choose either paper-based or computer-based formats—there is no difference in question structure, scoring, or difficulty level.
In this task, you are required to complete sentences or short passages by filling in the blanks with missing information from the recording. The difficulty of the task depends on the content of the audio, which could range from casual conversations to more academic or scientific topics.
Sentence Completion tasks in Section 1 are typically easier than those in Section 3.
Sentence Completion format example:
You will be given partial sentences with gaps, and your task is to fill in the correct words based on what you hear in the recording.
2. Step-by-Step Guide for Sentence Completion IELTS Listening
To score well on this task, follow these steps:
Step 1: Carefully read the instructions and note the word limit
Pay attention to the instructions and any bolded text. The word limit will be clearly stated. You might be allowed to write:
ONE WORD ONLY – write only one word.
ONE WORD AND OR A NUMBER – the answer may include one word, one number, or both.
NO MORE THAN TWO WORDS – write up to two words. Answers with more than the allowed number of words will be marked incorrect.
Step 2: Read the sentences and underline keywords
Before the recording starts, read through all the sentences and underline key information. This helps you focus on the main ideas and anticipate what type of word might be missing (e.g., noun, verb, adjective).
Step 3: Predict the answers
Try to predict what kind of word might fill each gap—its grammatical form and its meaning. This can make it easier to recognize the correct answer when you hear it.
Consider the meaning – what is the sentence about
Consider the grammar – what part of speech fits (noun, verb, adjective), and is it singular or plural
Look out for synonyms and paraphrasing, as the words used in the recording may differ from those in the question.
Step 4: Check your answers for accuracy
Make sure your completed sentences are grammatically correct and make sense. Also, double-check your spelling and whether singular or plural forms are used correctly.
3. Tips to Score High in Sentence Completion IELTS Listening
