I would like to recount an experience from Tết – the Vietnamese Lunar New Year, when I visited Hoan Kiem Lake’s pedestrian street. It is an exuberant place, particularly during the holiday season, with immense crowds congregating to celebrate and admire the fireworks display.
A couple of years ago, we decided to welcome New Year’s Eve at Hoan Kiem Lake. We anticipated a festive ambiance and a dazzling fireworks performance at midnight. As expected, the streets were teeming with people, creating a vibrant and truly electrifying atmosphere. Street performers, food vendors, and ornate decorations further enhanced the charm of the occasion.
We went there mainly because it is regarded as one of the most iconic places in the city to fully immerse ourselves in the euphoria of the New Year. Everyone seemed to be in high spirits, and we wanted to be part of that communal joy. Moreover, the fireworks display over the lake has a renowned reputation, so we believed it would be a memorable way to commence the year.
To be honest, I had rather ambivalent feelings about it. On the one hand, it was exhilarating to be part of such a grandiose celebration, surrounded by cheerful people and mesmerizing decorations. The fireworks were absolutely spectacular, making it an indelible experience. On the other hand, the crowd was somewhat overpowering at times. It was difficult to navigate the streets, and we had to endure a long wait before the fireworks began.
