Inversion is a common English grammar topic, but many learners avoid using it in exams due to fear of making mistakes. However, mastering inversion structures will help you score higher on tests and enhance your spoken and written English in daily life.
In this article, IDP will help you understand what inversion is and how to use inversion structures correctly. Don’t forget to practice with the inversion exercises at the end of the lesson.
1. What Is Inversion?
Inversion refers to the reversal of the position of an adverb and an auxiliary verb, which appear before the subject. Inversion is typically used to emphasize an action or quality of the subject and to make the sentence more expressive.
Inversion can be found in both spoken and written English, especially in more formal contexts such as literary works, academic essays, or news articles.
Basic inversion formula in English:
Adverb + Auxiliary verb + Subject + Main verb
Example 1:
I haven’t ever felt so lonely. → Never had I felt so lonely.
Adverb: Never | Auxiliary verb: had
Example 2:
I met him only once. → Only once did I meet him.
Adverb: Only once | Auxiliary verb: did
