The onward march of modern technology has greatly impacted people’s lives both positively and negatively over many decades. Regarding this, some individuals argue that the merits of technology are outweighed by a wider range of its demerits . Personally, I disagree with this notion and will offer my perspective in the following essay.
Admittedly, there are certain drawbacks of technological advances, among which an increasing unemployment rate seems to be notable. As a huge number of industrial and agricultural practices have been automated by sophisticated technological devices which can surpass human abilities, some laborers have been made redundant and unable to find another occupation. Furthermore, the growing use of online technological applications potentially results in loss of privacy since most contemporary social networking sites are equipped with surveillance functions which can easily follow users’ activities and obtain their personal information. Undoubtedly, these users will be at huge risk if their data is unfortunately hacked by cyber criminals or leaked by a systematic error.
However, I strongly believe that the technological benefits are of equal significance. Firstly, the widespread application of automatic technological devices in industry or agriculture can substantially improve work efficiency and reduce labor intensity. This is because these modern machines can operate ceaselessly for extremely long hours and handle much more complex or even dangerous tasks than most people are capable of. Secondly, state-of-the-art technology, or more specifically social networks, could also greatly facilitate everyday communication and work progress. For instance, Zoom, a popular virtual platform, has allowed many friends to easily keep in contact and employees to conveniently work from home via video calls or text messaging features.
In conclusion, despite the assumption that technological development has brought more disadvantages, I still hold a firm view that technological benefits, such as its important role in work efficiency improvements and facilitation of work and social communication, are equally significant.
