In English, changing the position of just one word in a sentence can completely alter its meaning. Syntax refers to the structure and word order in a sentence, helping create clarity, coherence, and logical flow. In the IELTS Writing test, using syntax effectively is key to writing strong and organized responses. In this article, IDP IELTS explores what syntax is and how to apply it to improve your IELTS Writing score.

1. What is Syntax

Syntax refers to the arrangement of words and phrases to form grammatically correct and meaningful sentences. In English, syntax follows grammar rules such as word order, subject-verb agreement, and the logical structure of a sentence. Changing a word’s position can completely change the meaning of a sentence.

Example:

  • She almost passed the IELTS test. → She nearly succeeded in passing the exam.

  • She passed almost the IELTS test. → This sentence is grammatically incorrect and confusing due to the incorrect position of "almost."

Mastering syntax allows you to express ideas clearly and logically, especially when writing complex paragraphs in the IELTS Writing test. A strong command of syntax helps create a good impression and can improve your score.

2. Zeugma and Its Variants

Zeugma is a rhetorical device where a single word—often a verb, noun, or preposition—is used to connect multiple words, phrases, or clauses. This helps eliminate repetition and makes writing more concise and elegant.

Examples:

  • One verb with two different subjects: His voice and his hands trembled.

  • One verb with multiple objects: The artists expressed emotion, creativity, and passion.

  • A preposition linking multiple phrases: The key to the challenge and the success is persistence and determination.

By simplifying connections in a sentence, zeugma improves flow and eliminates redundancy.

Common Types of Zeugma

Diazeugma

A single subject is linked to multiple verbs or verb phrases, usually to show a series of actions.

Example: The proposal outlined the problem, suggested a solution, and predicted the outcome.

Used in IELTS Writing Task 1 (Process) and Task 2 to list actions clearly:

Instead of: The government needs to invest in healthcare. The government needs to support education. The government needs to create jobs.

Use Diazeugma: The government needs to invest in healthcare, support education, and create jobs.

Prozeugma

The linking word appears at the beginning and is omitted in later clauses.

Example:

She dreamed of fame, he of freedom, and they of a better future. → "Dreamed" applies to all but is written only once.

Application in IELTS Writing Task 1:

Instead of: In 2023, Vietnam's exports increased by 15 percent, Thailand's exports increased by 10 percent, and Indonesia's exports increased by 8 percent.

Use Prozeugma:

In 2023, Vietnam's exports increased by 15 percent, Thailand's by 10 percent, and Indonesia's by 8 percent.

Mesozeugma

The linking word appears in the middle of the sentence, connecting the beginning and end.

Example: First the library, then the gallery was built, and finally the community center. → Emphasizes the final item.

Use Mesozeugma to highlight the last idea in a sentence:

Instead of: The healthcare and education systems are supported by the government, but the environment is overlooked.

Use Mesozeugma:

The healthcare and education systems are supported by the government, but not the environmental sector.

Hypozeugma

The linking word comes at the end, after listing other elements.

Example: First the stage, then the sound system, and finally the lights were installed.

This form emphasizes the final action and creates a dramatic conclusion:

Instead of:

The elderly need assistance. Children need assistance. People with disabilities need assistance. Low-income families need assistance.

Use Hypozeugma:

The elderly, children, people with disabilities, and low-income families need assistance.

Syllepsis

One word applies to multiple elements but has a different meaning for each.

Example: She opened her house and her heart to the guests. → "Opened" is used literally and figuratively.

Note: While syllepsis can add depth and stylistic flair, it should be used sparingly in IELTS academic writing to avoid ambiguity.

3. Syntax Practice with Answer Key

Rewrite the following sentences using proper syntax:

  1. She did not realise how important the document was until she lost it.

  2. The teacher praised the student who submitted the essay early.

  3. Because he arrived late, he missed the first part of the performance.

  4. They built a new school, a sports complex, and a library in just one year.

  5. The manager gave the employees a bonus to reward their hard work.

Suggested Answers:

  1. Not until the document was lost did she realise its importance. → Inversion using "not until" to emphasize the condition.

  2. The student, having submitted the essay early, received praise from the teacher. → Reduced relative clause and passive restructuring.

  3. Arriving late, he missed the beginning of the performance. → Reduced adverbial clause for cause.

  4. A new school, then a sports complex, and finally a library were built in just one year. → Using Hypozeugma to remove repetition.

  5. To recognise their dedication, the employees were awarded a bonus by the manager. → Passive voice with a purpose clause.
