IELTS Writing Task 2 is always one of the challenging sections for candidates because there are many types of questions that require you to have a good understanding of test-taking strategies to achieve a high score. In this article, IDP will introduce strategies to score full points with the Advantages - Disadvantages type of questions, and suggest sample exercises to help you get familiar with the test structure.

1 How to Identify an Advantages and Disadvantages Essay

Advantages and disadvantages essays in IELTS Writing Task 2 may be presented in different ways. Here are some typical question formats:

  • What are the advantages and disadvantages of...?

  • Do you think the advantages outweigh the disadvantages?

  • Discuss the advantages and disadvantages and give your opinion.

Sometimes, the question uses synonyms like benefits and drawbacks instead of advantages and disadvantages.

Example question:

A lot of places in the world rely on tourism as a main source of income. Unfortunately, tourism can also be a source of problems if it is not well-managed.

Question: What are the advantages and disadvantages of tourism in the modern world? Do you think the benefits outweigh the drawbacks?

2 Types of Advantages and Disadvantages Essays

There are two main types of advantages and disadvantages questions in IELTS Writing:

  • Essay asks for advantages and disadvantages only, without your opinion.

  • Essay asks for advantages and disadvantages, and your personal opinion.

Examples:

  1. Small businesses are disappearing and being replaced by large multinational companies. Do the advantages of this outweigh the disadvantages?

  2. Most career choices demand vocational skills or specialist knowledge. However, schools still teach academic subjects such as history or social studies. Discuss the advantages and disadvantages of this.

3 Structure for Advantages and Disadvantages Essays

Here are two simple structures you can follow. They may not be the most advanced, but they allow you to quickly plan and write within the time limit.

Structure 1:

  • Introduction

  • Advantages

  • Disadvantages

  • Conclusion

Structure 2:

  • Introduction

  • Body paragraph 1 (Advantage + Explanation + Example)

  • Body paragraph 2 (Disadvantage + Explanation + Example)

  • Conclusion with opinion (if asked)

4 How Many Main Points Should You Include?

Although a question may refer to multiple advantages and disadvantages, with a word limit of around 250 words, it is usually better to focus on one key advantage and one key disadvantage. This allows you to fully develop your arguments without going off-topic or running out of time.

However, if you are confident in managing your time and organizing your essay, you can present more than one point on each side.

5 How to Plan an Advantages and Disadvantages Essay

Planning takes just 5 minutes and is critical for organizing ideas and avoiding repetition or off-topic content. Follow these two steps:

5.1 Analyze the Question

You must identify:

  • Topic words – indicate the general theme.

  • Keywords – point to the specific aspect you need to focus on.

  • Instruction words – tell you what to do.

Example: A lot of places in the world rely on tourism as a main source of income. Unfortunately, tourism can also be a source of problems if it is not well-managed.

Question: What are the advantages and disadvantages of tourism in the modern world? Do you think that the benefits of tourism outweigh its drawbacks?

  • Topic word: tourism

  • Keyword: income and problems

  • Instruction: discuss pros and cons, then state your opinion

5.2 Brainstorm Key Ideas and Vocabulary

List synonyms for keywords and generate potential advantages and disadvantages. Write down the ones you can explain clearly.

6 How to Write an Advantages and Disadvantages Essay

Let’s use the tourism example to guide the writing process.

6.1 Introduction

Start by paraphrasing the question and clearly state the purpose of the essay.

Sample Introduction: Although holidaymakers contribute significantly to the economies of many popular destinations, the influx of tourists can also lead to serious issues. This essay will discuss how tourism can boost poor regions economically, while also causing problems such as displacement of local communities. Despite some drawbacks, the essay will argue that the benefits outweigh the disadvantages.

6.2 Body Paragraph 1 – Advantage

Start with a topic sentence. Then give an explanation and a real-world example.

Main idea: Poor areas are now prosperous tourist destinations Example: Thailand

Sample Paragraph: One country that has experienced major economic improvement due to tourism is Thailand. Over the past few decades, many small fishing villages have been transformed into popular holiday resorts. These developments have created countless jobs and business opportunities, significantly improving the standard of living in those areas.

6.3 Body Paragraph 2 – Disadvantage

Again, begin with a topic sentence, explain the point, and support it with an example.

Main idea: Displacement of local residents Example: Venice

Sample Paragraph: In Venice, for instance, the popularity of its canals and historic architecture has negatively impacted locals. The growing demand for hotels and restaurants has forced many residents to relocate. As a result, community bonds have weakened, and the authentic character of the area has diminished.

6.4 Conclusion

Summarize the key points and restate your opinion if the task requires it. Avoid introducing new ideas.

Sample Conclusion: To conclude, while tourism can disrupt local life, its positive economic impact, particularly in underdeveloped areas, is undeniable. Therefore, the advantages of tourism outweigh the drawbacks.
