Have you ever experienced a situation where you understood the listening content correctly but still chose the wrong answer in IELTS Listening, or read a passage in IELTS Reading but could not identify the correct response? These problems usually do not occur because of a lack of vocabulary or grammar, but because candidates fail to clearly distinguish between General Information and Detailed Information in the questions.

In this article, IDP will help you understand what General Information is, how it differs from Detailed Information, and share key strategies to help you perform more effectively in the IELTS exam.

1. Definitions of General Information and Detailed Information

1.1. What Is General Information?

General Information refers to information that provides an overall or broad idea of a paragraph, a talk, or a conversation. It summarises the main theme or central message rather than focusing on specific facts.

In IELTS, you can recognise General Information through the following signs:

  • Position: It often appears in the topic sentence at the beginning of a paragraph or the concluding sentence at the end.

  • Nature: It gives an overview of the entire content and usually answers questions such as What is this passage about? or What is the main purpose?, rather than focusing on details like numbers, dates, or names.

  • Vocabulary signals: It is often accompanied by summarising linkers such as Overall, In general, To sum up, On the whole, In short.

Examples of General Information:

  • The talk is mainly about the benefits of working from home.

  • The passage discusses the main reasons for climate change.

1.2. What Is Detailed Information?

Detailed Information refers to specific and precise facts that provide exact data in a listening or reading text and support the main idea (General Information).

Unlike the broad nature of General Information, Detailed Information has the following characteristics:

  • Position: It appears throughout the listening or reading text and is not limited to the introduction or conclusion. In IELTS Listening and Reading, detailed information is often located close to the position of the relevant question.

  • Nature: It is concrete and factual, providing precise data rather than general ideas. Detailed Information often involves numbers, dates, locations, proper names, reasons, or specific examples, and cannot be guessed without accurately listening or reading.

  • Vocabulary signals: It is commonly associated with numbers, time expressions, places, frequencies, degrees, or proper nouns. In the exam, Detailed Information is frequently paraphrased, so candidates must pay attention to synonyms and alternative expressions.

Examples of Detailed Information:

  • The course starts on 15 September and lasts for 12 weeks.

  • The museum is located on King Street, next to the city library.

2. How to Distinguish General and Detailed Information in IELTS Reading

2.1. Identifying Through Guiding Questions

To effectively distinguish between General and Detailed Information in IELTS Academic Reading, you should develop the habit of asking guiding questions when analysing a passage. These questions help you quickly identify which ideas are general and which are specific details that explain or support the main idea.

Helpful guiding questions include:

  • What is the main idea of this paragraph?

  • Is this sentence summarising the content or describing a specific detail?

  • Is this sentence explaining or illustrating a previously mentioned point?

  • Does the content include examples, numbers, reasons, or expert evidence?

  • Is this the topic sentence of the paragraph? Does it provide an overview of the entire passage?

  • Does the sentence mention specific details or examples to support an argument?

2.2. Identifying Through Keywords in the Question

In IELTS Reading, keywords in the question are the most important clues for determining the type of information you need to find. Correctly identifying these keywords helps you decide whether to skim for general ideas or scan for details, saving time and avoiding incorrect answers.

Common keywords for General Information:

  • mainly about

  • purpose of the talk

  • what the speaker is describing

Common keywords for Detailed Information:

  • when, where, how much, how many

  • date, price, location, name

  • according to the speaker

2.3. Identifying Through Question Types

Question features

Type of information

Multiple Choice questions that test understanding of the main idea, purpose, or speaker’s attitude (e.g. What is the talk mainly about?, What does the speaker think?)

General Informaion

Matching questions that require identifying general characteristics or descriptions rather than numerical data

General Information

Form / Table / Note Completion requiring exact answers such as names, numbers, dates, addresses, or spelling

Detailed Information

Sentence Completion where candidates fill in missing key details (often nouns or numbers)

When, Where, How many, How much, What time, Which, with strict word limits

3. The Role of General and Detailed Information in IELTS Reading

In IELTS Reading, General Information and Detailed Information serve different but equally important functions. Understanding their roles helps you read more efficiently, manage your time effectively, and avoid common mistakes.

3.1. The Role of General Information

General Information provides overall direction during the reading process. It helps you understand the main idea of a paragraph or the entire passage before focusing on details.

Key functions:

  • Identifying the main topic and author’s purpose

  • Quickly locating relevant paragraphs

  • Determining the writer’s tone or attitude (e.g. neutral, critical, supportive)

Question types that focus on General Information: Matching Headings, Choosing a Title, Matching Sentence Endings.

3.2. The Role of Detailed Information

Detailed Information forms the basis for choosing accurate answers. It includes names, numbers, dates, or specific arguments that support the main idea.

Key functions:

  • Providing exact data to answer factual questions

  • Requiring high accuracy in vocabulary and grammar

  • Testing understanding of cause-and-effect relationships or minor but important details

Question types that focus on Detailed Information: True/False/Not Given or Yes/No/Not Given, Fill in the Blanks, Short Answer Questions.

4. Sample Analysis Exercise: General Information

Exercise: Identify the General Information of the paragraph.

Paragraph: Many people believe that working from home has become increasingly popular in recent years. This trend is largely driven by technological advancements and changes in working habits. As a result, companies are adopting more flexible working policies to improve employee satisfaction.

Question: What is the general information of the paragraph?

A. The types of technology used for remote work B. The increasing popularity of working from home C. The disadvantages of flexible working policies D. The cost of working from home for companies

Correct answer: B

Explanation: The paragraph discusses the overall trend of working from home, rather than specific statistics or examples. All sentences support one general idea: working from home is becoming more popular. This is the General Information.
