IELTS Writing Task 1: All Question Types and How to Write Them (With Sample Essay)

For those preparing for IELTS at home, the Writing section can be especially challenging. To reach your target band score, it’s not enough to simply understand the topic—you also need accurate grammar, a strong vocabulary range, and effective use of key phrases and prepositions.

This guide provides a complete overview of IELTS Writing Task 1 chart types and strategies to write high-quality responses.

1. Line Graph

A line graph is used to display data over a period of time. The x-axis usually shows the time period, while the y-axis shows values or measurements. This chart type is ideal for describing trends. In Writing Task 1, you are required to report the information presented, not give your opinion.

Key tips:

• Pay attention to the x and y axes to understand units and time

• Identify the number of lines in the graph

• Focus on start and end points, fluctuations, and trends

• Compare key features across the lines

2. Bar Chart

A bar chart contains rectangular bars that represent data. Bars can be vertical or horizontal and are used to compare values. Your task is to identify and describe major differences or similarities.

Key tips:

• In the overview, mention 2–3 key trends

• Outline the structure before writing to organize your ideas

3. Pie Chart

A pie chart is used to show data distribution in percentages. Each segment represents a category, often differentiated by color or symbols.

Key tips:

• If the chart includes time, describe changes over time (increase, decrease, no change)

• If time is not a factor, focus on comparisons only (largest, smallest, equal)

4. Table

Tables present complex sets of numerical data, sometimes with time references. Tables often require careful comparison across categories.

Key tips:

• Do not state opinions or irrelevant data

• Use simple past for past years; present simple for general facts

• Select the most relevant data rather than describing all figures

5. Process Diagram

Process charts show how something works or is made. These do not include numbers. They are divided into:

Natural Process – Describes natural cycles (e.g., water cycle, plant growth). Use active voice.

Man-made Process – Shows human-influenced systems (e.g., food production). Use passive voice.

6. Map

Map questions describe changes in a location over time, such as development in a town or facility. There are two types:

• Single map (describe using present tense)

• Two or more maps (describe and compare using past, present, or future tense)

Key tips:

• Focus on key changes (new buildings, road expansions, etc.)

• Use suitable prepositions and descriptive phrases

7. Mixed Charts (Multiple Charts)

This type combines two chart types (e.g., pie chart with table). You need to compare and describe relationships between the data sets.

Common combinations:

• Table and pie chart

• Pie chart and bar chart

• Line graph and bar chart

• Task Achievement (25%) Your ability to cover all key data and meet the task requirements.

• Coherence and Cohesion (25%) Logical flow of information and clear paragraph structure.

• Lexical Resource (25%) Variety and accuracy of vocabulary. Avoid repetition and spelling errors.

• Grammatical Range and Accuracy (25%) Use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures with accurate grammar.

Introduction

Paraphrase the task question using different vocabulary and grammar structures. Mention the chart type, subject, and time period (if given).

Useful verbs: shows, illustrates, compares, presents

Useful phrases: the chart provides data on..., how something changed over time

Overview

Summarize the main trends or key features. Avoid detailed data. Focus on high/low points or major changes.

Body Paragraphs

Use 2–3 body paragraphs to describe specific trends, comparisons, or patterns.

Tips:

• Use linking phrases: Regarding, With regard to, As can be seen from

• Focus on the most important features

• Avoid listing every single number

• Do not express personal opinions or use informal language

• Avoid personal pronouns (I, me, we) and contractions (don’t, won’t)

• Use a variety of sentence types and structures

• Paraphrase the task carefully

• Allocate no more than 20 minutes to Task 1

• Proofread for grammar and spelling in the last 2 minutes

• Word Choice: Avoid casual or basic vocabulary

• Spelling Errors: Stick to familiar words to avoid mistakes

• Grammar Mistakes:

  • Misusing relative clauses

  • Incorrect prepositions

  • Wrong verb tenses (especially with time-based charts)

• Formatting Numbers: Write out simple numbers (e.g., ten days, not 10 days)

Task: The pie charts below show the percentage of housing owned and rented in the UK in 1991 and 2007.

Sample Answer:

The pie charts compare home ownership and renting for 1991 and 2007 in percentage terms. In 1991, homeowners were the most popular type of housing, accounting for 60 percent. The next largest category was social rented homes at 23 percent. Privately rented homes made up 11 percent, and social housing was the smallest group at 6 percent.

By 2007, the proportion of homeowners rose to 70 percent, a 10 percent increase. Social rented homes decreased to 17 percent. Privately rented homes remained unchanged at 11 percent, though the total number increased due to housing growth. Social housing dropped to just 2 percent.
