IELTS Writing Scoring Criteria

Both the IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training Writing tests are scored based on the following four criteria:

  1. Task Achievement (Task 1) / Task Response (Task 2)

  2. Coherence and Cohesion

  3. Lexical Resource

  4. Grammatical Range and Accuracy

Each criterion contributes 25% to your total score. The final band score is calculated by averaging and rounding scores across the four categories. Note that Task 2 is weighted more heavily than Task 1, so performing well on Task 2 is essential.

Breakdown of Scoring Criteria

1. Task Achievement (TA) – Task 1

This criterion assesses whether your response addresses all parts of the task effectively. Clear and logical arguments with accurate data will score higher.

2. Task Response (TR) – Task 2

In Task 2, you're expected to write a focused essay that addresses the question directly. A high-scoring response clearly presents and develops ideas with supporting examples.

3. Coherence and Cohesion (CC)

This refers to the clarity and logical organization of your writing. A coherent essay uses paragraphs effectively and links ideas with appropriate cohesive devices.

4. Lexical Resource (LR)

This evaluates your vocabulary range and accuracy. Using precise and varied vocabulary without spelling or word form errors will boost your score.

5. Grammatical Range and Accuracy (GRA)

Your score here depends on the variety and accuracy of grammar structures used. Effective use of simple, compound, and complex sentences, along with correct punctuation, is essential.

Note: In Task 2, "Task Response" replaces "Task Achievement" since the essay must focus on answering the question fully and presenting a well-supported position.
