1. Assess English proficiency and set long-term goals
Before starting to build the most effective study schedule, you should determine your current proficiency level. After knowing your actual level, you need to clarify your reason for taking the IELTS test and identify your target score. Once you've answered these questions, you can easily create an effective IELTS preparation plan that aligns with reality.
To determine your own abilities, you can participate in IELTS mock tests, or take quick tests to better understand yourself.

Identifying your proficiency level helps you outline a more specific preparation process

2.1. Sample IELTS exam preparation timetable
You should determine how much time you can devote to studying each day, and then allocate the learning skills interspersed with each other in a reasonable way, without repetition.
Monday | Tuesday | Wednesday | Thursday | Friday | Saturday | Sunday |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
Listening Reading | Speaking Writing | Listening Reading | Speaking Writing | Listening Reading | Speaking Writing | Ôn tập |
Listening & Speaking: 45' - 1h/study session
Reading & Writing: 1h45' - 2h/study session
Reading skills will help you encounter many new vocabularies, supporting Listening well; or Speaking skills with many new and unique situations will help you get more ideas when practicing Writing skills.
Above all, Reading and Writing are two skills that require more time to practice, so you cannot combine these two skills in one study session as it will lose patience and concentration when practicing. Therefore, you should combine Listening and Reading skills in one study session, similar to Speaking and Writing skills.
When you have spent a lot of time during the week practicing, the weekend is when you should summarize the knowledge you have learned over the past week. Self-assess what parts you have done well, where you are not stable, and consolidate the points where you are still lacking. Take time to relax and plan your study for the following week.
2.2. Arranging study time
Dividing IELTS study time with 2-3 hours each day for practice is quite reasonable and sufficient. Arranging regular study time will help you avoid cramming knowledge excessively for a long time, avoiding unnecessary pressure.
For those who have lost their grammar foundation or have an unstable foundation:
Should spend about 80% of practice time learning grammar.
Practice and learn more Listening - Reading skills lessons at an easy level. This practice period helps to consolidate grammar, build basic vocabulary, and familiarize yourself with the exam format.
For those who have a good grasp of grammar and are getting familiar with the IELTS exam format, you should:
Spend 50% of the time consolidating grammar
Spend the remaining 1 - 1.5 hours learning and practicing the 4 skills.
Note: To avoid boredom, you should alternate the order of learning skills each week. However, some skill pairs should be arranged to be learned together to enhance effectiveness. You can combine Writing practice with learning vocabulary by topic/academic vocabulary phrases. Informal language can be practiced in both Listening conversations and can be applied to Speaking.
Additionally, learning standard pronunciation and sound perception (ending sounds, single sounds...) in listening skills also greatly supports the speaking process.
Depending on your personal study and work schedule, you can allocate IELTS study time appropriately. However, IDP recommends that you should spend at least 1 hour for each study session to ensure focus and productivity.

You should have an IELTS exam preparation schedule of at least 4 hours per day
2.3. Practice every day
After scheduling the days according to skills, you need to clarify the types of exercises for each skill. Difficult types of exercises that make you confused will need to be allocated more time. Similarly, weak skills will require you to select materials and practice methods sequentially to gradually improve.

Combine 2 skills in one practice session
2.4. Train concentration ability and patience
To successfully prepare for the IELTS exam, you need to have the ability to manage focus and train patience. There are many ways to train and manage focus such as:
Build an ideal learning environment: Find a private, quiet study space, away from noise. A tidy study corner with all groups of materials, stationery, dictionaries will help you quickly enter a more focused mode.
Minimize the possibility of being disturbed: Turn off your phone or turn on airplane mode during study time. If you need to use a computer, install software to block websites and social media that can easily cause distraction. Or even inform your friends and family about your exam preparation plan to avoid being disturbed.
Create motivation by finding a study partner: A friend who is also preparing for IELTS will help you maintain your commitment and study more effectively. Create short check-in sessions after each study session to check each other's progress.
Disciplined and focused revision is the key to success in conquering the exam. Always fulfill your commitment to the plan you have set and only make adjustments after you have tried your best.
2.5. Allow yourself to relax
Each week, take time to allow yourself to relax by watching movies, listening to music, or watching TV shows in English. This is a way to rest that helps you improve your Listening skills, reinforce vocabulary, and relieve pressure after a period of diligent study.

Allow yourself to relax after intense study hours
2.6. Take mock tests before starting the official exam
About 1-2 months before the official exam, you should participate in mock tests to determine your ability. You'll see how far you are from your set goal; from there, reinforce your knowledge and skills that are not yet solid, while using it as motivation to strive even more.
Conversely, if your score exceeds your goal, don't be complacent. Continue to review and further enhance your advanced knowledge.
