Choosing between “in,” “on,” and “at” for time, place, or transport can be confusing in daily communication or exams. This guide will clarify their usage and show you the rules that matter most.

1. What Are Prepositions?

A preposition is a word or phrase that comes before nouns or pronouns to show relationships: location, time, direction, manner, or cause.

Examples:

  • The book is on the table.

  • I will meet you at 3 pm.

  • She went to school by bus.

Common types include:

  • Time: in, on, at, from, to

  • Place: in, at, on, above, below

  • Direction: to, from, into, out of

  • Manner: by, with, without

  • Cause: because of, due to

  • Others: for, about, like, as

2. Types of Prepositions

2.1 Time Prepositions

Prepositions for specifying when something happens.

Explain why an action happened or its intended result.

  • with a view to: saving money with a view to buying a house.

2.7 Relationship Prepositions

Express ownership, connection, or association.

  • of: leg of the table

  • to: teacher to students

  • with: man with a hat

2.8 Origin Prepositions

Refer to source or origin.

  • from: She is from Vietnam.

  • of: house made of brick.

3. Prepositional Phrases

Groups of words starting with a preposition, functioning as adjectives or adverbs.

Examples:

  • on the table, in the park, with my friends

The book on the table is mine. She listens to music with headphones.

4. Usage Tips

Choose correct prepositions based on meaning and context.

Common confusing pairs:

  • She drove to the store.

  • Don’t ring the bell. Come right into the house.

  • Drive onto the grass to park.

  • in the sea = underwater

  • at sea = somewhere on the sea
