In addition to basic types of conditional sentences, mixed conditionals in English are a more advanced topic frequently seen in exams and especially in the IELTS test. So how can you identify a mixed conditional sentence, and how should it be used? Let’s dive into the details with IDP below.

1. What is a Mixed Conditional Sentence?

  • A mixed conditional sentence is a combination of the second and third conditional structures. These sentences often express unreal situations in the past that result in hypothetical outcomes in the past or present.

Examples:

  • If I had known, I would have come to the event.

  • If I were rich, I would have bought a new house last month.

2. Mixed Conditional Structures and Usage

Mixed Conditional Type 1 (Past ➡ Present)

This type refers to an unreal event in the past causing a present result. The if-clause uses the third conditional structure, while the main clause uses the second conditional.

Structure:

If-Clause

Main Clause

If + S + had + V3

S + would + V-inf

Example:

  • If Tom had prepared more carefully for the interview, he would become an employee of that company.

➡ The reality is that Tom is not an employee because he did not prepare well. The sentence shows an unreal past condition with a present result.

Mixed Conditional Type 2 (Present ➡ Past)

This type describes an unreal situation in the present that leads to a hypothetical outcome in the past. The if-clause uses the second conditional, while the main clause uses the third conditional.

Structure:

If-Clause

Main Clause

If + S + V2/ed

S + would/could/might + have + V3

Example:

  • If she had known you were allergic to peanuts, she would have made a different dish.

➡ The reality is she did not know, so she cooked a dish with peanuts. This type of conditional expresses an unreal present situation that could have changed a past result.

3. Inversion in Mixed Conditional Sentences

Besides the basic mixed conditional structure, it's also useful to know how to form inverted conditional sentences.

Mixed Conditional

Inverted Structure

Example

Type 1

Had + S + V3, S + would + V

Had he taken better care of himself, he would not be sick now.

Type 2

Were + S + to V, S + would + have + V3

Were I to have a chance, I would have become a rock star.
