IELTS Exam Types: What Are Your Options?

When planning to take the IELTS exam, it’s important for test takers to choose the right test type to match their goals. There are two main options: IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training.

IELTS Academic is designed for those who want to study at higher education institutions in English speaking countries. If you’re aiming to join a university or other higher education institutions abroad, this is the test for you. The Academic test focuses on the language skills needed for academic study and is accepted by universities and colleges worldwide.

IELTS General Training is ideal for candidates who plan to work, train, or migrate to an English speaking country. This version of the IELTS exam assesses your English language abilities in practical, everyday contexts, making it suitable for those seeking employment or residency.

For those applying for a UK visa, there’s also IELTS for UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration). This test is specifically approved for UK visa applications and is available in both Academic and General Training formats.

Choosing the right IELTS test type is key to achieving your academic, professional, or migration goals. Make sure to check the requirements of your chosen institution or country before booking your test.

Why More Thai Students Are Taking IELTS Outside Bangkok?

In recent years, we at IDP have observed a noticeable increase in students choosing to take the test in provincial areas rather than in the capital. As interest in studying and migrating abroad continues to grow, many are seeking more convenient locations to sit the English proficiency test. The IELTS test is designed to assess language proficiency for academic, professional, and migration purposes, making it an essential step for those aiming to meet international standards. IELTS Thailand has responded to this trend by expanding access across the country. IELTS, as one of the most trusted English language tests, remains in high demand. To help reduce test-related stress and improve accessibility, IELTS test centres have now expanded to several cities outside Bangkok, making it easier for candidates to take IELTS at a location that suits them.

Taking the IELTS test close to home offers several benefits. It reduces travel costs and time, helping to lower stress and anxiety related to travel and time management. Being in a familiar environment can also ease test-day nerves. Additionally, many candidates choose to enrol in preparation or tutoring courses at these test centres, as a number of our locations also provide tailored IELTS preparation programmes to meet the needs of test takers. These courses often focus on improving grammar and teaching effective techniques for each section of the test, helping candidates build the skills needed for success.

Since the demand for IELTS tests across Thailand has increased, here are some of our most popular test centres located outside Bangkok:

IELTS in Chiang Mai: Northern Thailand's Hub

Chiang Mai is undeniably the most popular city in the north. As a major tourist destination, it also attracts many foreign test takers who choose to sit the IELTS here. Many Thai students likewise prefer taking the test in Chiang Mai, as the IDP test centre is easily accessible.

Our computer-delivered IELTS test centre is located at I-Genius English Language Institute Chiang Mai, inside Central Festival Chiang Mai. This centre also offers IELTS preparation classes to help you get ready for your test.

Another test centre is situated at Hui Zhong Language School, located in Fifth Avenue on Chiang Mai-Phrao Road. As one of our newest venues, all equipment here is brand new. This test centre is also very easy to reach and offers convenient parking facilities.

For IELTS on Paper, the test is usually conducted at Kantary Hills Hotel, though occasionally it may be held at alternative locations such as Chiang Mai University. Generally, paper-based tests are conducted in universities or hotel convention rooms. If you choose to take the IELTS on Paper, please make sure to double-check your test venue in advance.

Hat Yai: Southern Students’ IELTS Gateway

When it comes to IELTS test centres in Southern Thailand, Hat Yai stands out as one of the most popular cities in the region. As the commercial centre of Songkhla province, Hat Yai plays a key role in trade between Thailand and Malaysia.

It is also home to the main campus of Prince of Songkla University (PSU), further solidifying its importance in the South. IDP has a strong presence in Hat Yai, with both a study abroad office and IELTS test centres offering both IELTS on Computer and IELTS on Paper. Our computer-delivered IELTS test centre is located at C-Bright Language School, directly opposite PSU. This centre is also a well-known provider of IELTS preparation courses in Hat Yai, with many candidates completing their prep here before sitting the actual test.

Our IELTS on Paper tests are typically held at Buri Sriphu Hotel, which is conveniently located near the Hat Yai bus station.

Khon Kaen: Preparation and Test Options in the Northeast

IDP has been offering IELTS testing in Khon Kaen for many years. Our IELTS on Computer test centre is located at Greater Good Education, Kaen Nakorn Office Park, right beside the well-known Bueng Kaen Nakhon Reservoir.

Test takers can also enrol in IELTS preparation courses at Greater Good Education before sitting the exam. These courses cover a range of subjects relevant to the IELTS exam, including reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Preparation courses are available throughout the week and can be taken over several weeks to fit different schedules. Additionally, IDP has an office in Khon Kaen where you can visit for advice on studying abroad or to get general information about the IELTS test; more details can be found on the official IELTS information page.

Our IELTS on Paper test is typically conducted at the Faculty of Humanities and Social Sciences, Khon Kaen University.

In addition to the test centres already mentioned, IDP also operates several other IELTS test locations across Thailand. One notable example is our test centre in Nakhon Ratchasima (Korat). As the gateway to the Northeast, Korat serves as a strategic transport hub, making it easily accessible from surrounding provinces. Our IELTS on Computer test centre in Korat is located at Well-Balanced English Language School, conveniently near The Mall Korat.
