When you’re learning a new language, it can be difficult to know where to start. Here’s what you can do to get better at English.

Set a goal

Write down your English language goals.

  • Why am I learning English?

  • What do I want to achieve?

  • When do I want to achieve it?

  • How can I reach this goal?

Understand how you learn

How do you like to learn English? Understanding this can help you get better more quickly.

  • What types of learning materials do you like? This could be books, videos, articles, podcasts or infographics.

  • What types of activities do you find fun for learning? For example, do you like doing language exercises, playing games, having discussions, working on group projects or writing in a journal?

Get help

Join an English language class or get your own tutor. This way, you can practise English and get advice on how to get better.

  • Do you prefer learning online or in a classroom?

  • Do you enjoy studying with other students or alone with a tutor?

  • How much time can you spend on classes?

Use English everyday

Your English language skills will improve faster if you practise regularly. Try one these activities to use English every day.

  • Watch your favourite shows in English with subtitles.

  • Get a graded reader from the library. A graded reader is a book made for people learning English. It has easier language.

  • Use your phone to record yourself speaking in English. Listen back to hear how you sound.

  • If you’re in a place where people speak English, practise asking questions when you go to a cafe or the supermarket.

  • Write a few sentences each day to practise new words you’ve learnt.

Check your progress

Stay excited about study by seeing how much you’ve learnt. Here are some ideas:

  • Do practice exercises to test your English skills.

  • Ask a teacher to tell you how you’re doing when you talk or write.

Be patient

Finally, be kind to yourself. Learning a new language takes time. Don’t be afraid to make mistakes. Keep going – you’ll get better!
