In this section, we'll guide you through the process of accessing your results and understanding what they mean. Find everything you need to know about your IELTS results. Learn about the band scores, what examiners look for and how to request a remark.

Understanding your IELTS test results

The IELTS test results are reported as band scores which range from a band 0 to a band 9, with each band corresponding to a level of English-language proficiency. Each of these nine bands indicates a specific level of proficiency in English, from non-user to expert user. They help in assessing where you stand in terms of your English language skills, which is vital for academic and professional settings.

Along with your overall band score, you will also receive individual scores for each section of the test – Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. These scores reflect your English-language proficiency and are crucial for your academic or professional journey.

Sharing your IELTS test results with institutions

When it comes to sharing your IELTS achievements with universities, employers, or other organisations, the IELTS Test Report Form (TRF) is your key document. The TRF is an official confirmation of your test result and is widely recognised as proof of your English language proficiency. It details your overall band score and individual scores in Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking sections.

Sharing your IELTS scores with institutions is straightforward. You can request that additional copies of your TRF be sent directly to the universities, organisations, or immigration bodies you're applying to. This process can usually be done at the time of your test registration or shortly after receiving your results.

For a quicker and more convenient process, the IELTS eTRF – a digital version of the IELTS TRF – is an excellent option. You can simply forward the eTRF to the relevant institutions.

Enquiry on IELTS test results

It's natural to expect a certain IELTS test result score, and sometimes, the outcome may not match your expectations. In such cases,  you can request a remark (Enquiry on Results). This must be done within six weeks of your test date. The reassessment process can take anywhere from 2 to 21 days. If there's a change in your scores post-remark, the fee for the Enquiry on Results will be refunded.

Maintaining the validity of your IELTS test results

Generally, IELTS results are considered valid for two years from the test date. This period is recognised by most educational institutions, employers, and immigration authorities worldwide. It's important to plan your applications and submissions within this timeframe to ensure that your IELTS results are accepted.

To maintain or even improve your English proficiency beyond the validity period of your IELTS results, continuous practice and exposure to the language are key. Here are some tips to keep your English skills sharp:

  • Regular practice: Engage in regular reading, writing, speaking, and listening in English. This could involve reading English books or articles, writing essays, practising conversation with native speakers, and listening to English podcasts or watching English-language media. Also spend time taking IELTS practice tests to familiarise yourself with the test format and questions.

  • Continued learning: Consider enrolling in advanced English courses or workshops. Continuous learning will not only maintain your language proficiency but also enhance it.

  • Stay updated: Language evolves, and so does the IELTS test format. Staying informed about any changes in the IELTS exam pattern or criteria can be beneficial if you plan to retake the test.

Your IELTS score reflects your proficiency at a certain point in time. To ensure that your language skills remain relevant and strong, continuous practice and engagement with the language are essential, whether for further studies, professional growth, or migration.
