More than 11,500 organisations recognise IELTS in over 140 countries as a true indicator of your English-language skills. These organisations are wide-ranging, from universities to training institutions, government departments and immigration agencies, professional and industrial organisations. Each of these organisations set a minimum band score, so make sure to find out the IELTS entry requirements needed for your application. You can search for your IELTS recognising organisation on this page.
You can use your IELTS score to apply to educational institutions around the world. Multinational companies also accept IELTS as proof of your English-language skills, as well as immigration authorities in Australia, Canada, the UK and in the USA. Some occupations in English-speaking countries require IELTS for professional registration, such as nursing and teaching.
The minimum band score needed to study or work at a particular organisation, or migrate to a country may vary. Make sure to check the IELTS band score you need before taking the IELTS test.

For both IELTS on paper and IELTS on computer, you will not be able to bring your own paper into the test for security reasons. If you are sitting IELTS on computer, we will provide you with a pencil and paper. You also receive paper for your Speaking test to help you organise your thoughts as you speak with the examiner.
Yes, you are encouraged to write notes on the question booklets. IELTS examiners do not have access to your question booklets.
Pencil is recommended for the IELTS Listening, Reading, and Writing tests. This is because tests are scanned and work best with pencil. It also means that you can easily erase and rewrite words. If you forget to bring a pencil, the test centre will provide one for you.
If you take IELTS on Computer, you will do the tests in the following order on the same day: Listening, Reading and Writing, with the Speaking test before or after this test session.
If you take IELTS on Paper, you will do the tests in the following order: Writing, Reading and Listening. Depending on the test centre, the Speaking test can be done on the same day, or up to 7 days either before or after the test date.
If you choose to take IELTS on computer, you will take the Listening, Reading and Writing test parts using a computer.
If you choose to take the IELTS on paper, you will complete the Listening, Reading and Writing test parts on paper.
The Speaking test for both paper and computer are face to face with an examiner. This is the best way to measure your speaking skills as it takes a more realistic approach: a life-like conversation with an examiner.
The Academic and General Training test fee is the same. You can contact your nearest test centre to find out the test fee for your country and in your local currency. The approximate cost of the test is USD 245.
