Did you know that IELTS conducted a record-breaking 4 million tests worldwide in 2023? That’s almost the same as the population of metropolitan Montreal! If you're dreaming of migrating to Canada, then you'll want to keep reading.

When you apply for a Canadian visa, you’ll need to show that you can meet the government’s language requirements. Let's take a closer look at how IELTS can help you reach your immigration goals in Canada

Canada as a Destination for IELTS Test Takers

Canada is known for its high standard of living, excellent education system, and diverse culture, making it a popular destination for immigrants from all over the world.

In recent years, Canada has also been increasing its immigration targets to help manage the country's aging population and declining birth rate. As a result, there are many opportunities for immigrants to Canada, especially in industries such as healthcare, technology, and engineering.

IELTS has been trusted by the Canadian government and test takers as a reliable and fair English language proficiency test for over 30 years. If you're applying for permanent residency or Canadian citizenship, you can take the IELTS test to prove your English language level.

Additionally, if you're applying for a study or work permit, then you may also need to take the IELTS test.

With IELTS, you can be confident that your level of English will be accurately assessed and recognised by Canadian immigration authorities, paving the way for a brighter future and enabling you to make the most of your opportunities.

IELTS and IRCC changes to English language testing requirements

The IRCC (Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada) recently changed its English language requirements for the Student Direct Stream (SDS) visa program. These changes mean that IELTS test takers now have more opportunities to achieve their study dreams in Canada.

The Student Direct Stream (SDS) is a fast visa application process offered by the Canadian government to eligible countries. Applications are usually processed within 20 days. SDS is open to applicants from Antigua and Barbuda, Brazil, China, Colombia, Costa Rica, India, Morocco, Pakistan, Peru, the Philippines, Senegal, Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, Trinidad and Tobago and Vietnam.

From 10 August 2023, you no longer need a score of 6.0 in each section (Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking) of the IELTS Academic test for SDS applications. Now, you only need to reach an overall score of 6.0. For example, if you scored 5.5 in Reading and Writing, and 6.5 in Speaking and Listening, you would achieve an overall band score of 6.0.

You can read more about the changes and requirements for the SDS visa program here.

Planning to move to Canada for other reasons? The IELTS band score you need will depend on the type of immigration program you're applying for. Visit the IRCC website for a full list of English language requirements.
