What IELTS Test Formats Are Available in Singapore?

IELTS in Singapore is primarily delivered on computer for IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training.

Following the discontinuation of traditional IELTS on Paper for these test types in Singapore from 28 June 2026, candidates can choose from available computer-based testing options, including a format that allows them to complete the Writing section by hand.

IELTS on Computer – Writing on Computer

With IELTS on computer, you complete the Listening, Reading and Writing sections using a computer at an approved IELTS test centre.

The Speaking test remains a face-to-face assessment with a trained IELTS examiner.

This format may suit candidates who are comfortable typing and prefer completing all three written test sections on a computer.

Benefits include:

• Flexible test dates and session availability

• Computer-based Listening, Reading and Writing sections

• Face-to-face Speaking assessment with an examiner

• Results typically available within one to five days, often sooner

IELTS on Computer – Writing on Paper

Prefer handwriting your answers for the Writing section?

The new IELTS on computer (Writing on Paper) option allows candidates to complete Listening and Reading on computer while writing their responses by hand.

This option combines the convenience of computer-delivered IELTS with the familiarity of handwritten Writing responses.

The Speaking test continues to be conducted with a human examiner.

Both computer-based options follow the same IELTS assessment standards and scoring criteria. Choosing to type or handwrite your Writing responses does not change how your English language ability is assessed.

Availability may vary by test centre and test date.

IELTS for UKVI and IELTS Life Skills

If you're applying for a UK visa, you may need to take IELTS for UKVI or IELTS Life Skills, depending on your visa category and requirements.

IELTS for UKVI is available through approved test centres, while IELTS Life Skills remains available in paper-based format.

Before booking, confirm which IELTS test type is required by the relevant UK immigration authority.

How to Book Your IELTS Test in Singapore

Booking your IELTS test with IDP Singapore can be completed online in a few simple steps.

Step 1: Choose your IELTS test type

Start by identifying which IELTS test you need.

• IELTS Academic: Commonly required for higher education and professional registration

• IELTS General Training: Commonly used for migration, employment and certain training purposes

• IELTS for UKVI: Required for certain UK visa applications

• IELTS Life Skills: Designed for specific UK visa and immigration requirements

Always confirm the requirements of the organisation receiving your results before selecting your test.

Step 2: Check available IELTS test dates

Visit the IELTS test dates in Singapore page to explore upcoming sessions.

You can compare available dates, test times, locations and formats before choosing your preferred session.

If you're applying for university admission or a visa, allow sufficient time for your results to be released before your application deadline.

Step 3: Select your preferred IELTS test centre

Choose an available test centre based on location, test format and schedule.

For example, candidates working near Singapore's CBD may prefer Raffles Place, while those travelling through Bugis may find United Lisen Education Centre more convenient.

Your preferred centre may not offer every test type or format on every date, so check availability before confirming your selection.

Step 4: Choose your IELTS Speaking test slot

After selecting your Listening, Reading and Writing test session, you may be able to choose from available Speaking test appointments.

The Speaking test is conducted face-to-face with an IELTS examiner and may take place on the same day as your other test sections or on another scheduled day.

Step 5: Complete your registration and payment

Enter your personal details carefully and provide the identification information required for your booking.

Complete your payment through the official booking platform and review your confirmation details.

Make sure your name and identification details match the document you will use on test day.

When Should You Book Your IELTS Test in Singapore?

The best time to book IELTS depends on your application deadline, preparation progress and target score.

If you're applying to a university overseas, consider taking your first IELTS test several months before the application deadline. This gives you time to receive your results and, if necessary, improve your score or book another test.

For January or February university intakes, candidates may consider taking IELTS in the preceding months, depending on individual university deadlines.

For August or September intakes, planning your test earlier in the year can provide additional flexibility.

Remember that IELTS results are generally accepted for two years, although individual organisations may apply their own validity requirements.
