IELTS results are reported on a 9-band scale, measuring your English language proficiency across four skills:
Listening: Your ability to understand spoken English in different contexts.
Reading: Your ability to understand and interpret written information.
Writing: Your ability to communicate ideas clearly and accurately in writing.
Speaking: Your ability to communicate effectively in spoken English.
You receive an individual band score for each skill and an overall IELTS band score.
Your overall IELTS band score is calculated by averaging your four individual skill scores and rounding the result to the nearest whole or half band according to IELTS scoring rules.
For example:
IELTS skill | Band score |
|---|---|
Listening | 7.0 |
Reading | 6.5 |
Writing | 6.0 |
Speaking | 7.5 |
Overall IELTS band score | 7.0 |
There is no universal passing or failing score for IELTS Academic or General Training. The band score you need depends on the university, employer, immigration authority or professional organisation you are applying to.
Once you've received your results, compare your scores against the requirements for your intended university, employer, professional registration or visa application.
Scenario: | Your next step: |
|---|---|
1. If you've achieved your target IELTS score | Congratulations! You can proceed with your application and arrange to share your official IELTS results with your chosen organisation. |
2. If you think your IELTS score should be higher | You can request an Enquiry on Results (EOR), also known as an IELTS remark. An EOR allows you to request a review of one or more sections of your IELTS test. In Singapore, you must submit your remark request within six weeks of your original test date. If your band score changes following the remark, your EOR fee will be refunded. |
3. If you only need to improve one IELTS skill | You may be eligible for IELTS One Skill Retake, which allows you to retake just one section of your IELTS test without repeating the other three. This option is available to eligible IELTS on computer test takers at participating test centres. Before booking, check whether your receiving organisation accepts IELTS One Skill Retake results. |
4. If you need to improve multiple IELTS skills | You can consider retaking the full IELTS test. Review your previous performance and focus your preparation on the skills where you need the most improvement. |
Sometimes IELTS results may take longer than the usual release period.
Additional checks may be required to verify test information, confirm results or maintain the integrity of the assessment process.
