What is the UK High Potential Individual (HPI) visa?

The UK High Potential Individual visa is an immigration route for recent graduates of eligible universities outside the United Kingdom.

It allows successful applicants to live and work in the UK without securing a job offer or employer sponsorship before applying.

Depending on your qualification, you can stay for:

  • Two years: If you hold an eligible bachelor's or master's degree.

  • Three years: If you hold an eligible PhD or other doctoral qualification.

During your stay, you can work for an employer, look for employment, undertake eligible self-employment or establish a business.

However, the HPI visa cannot be extended and does not directly lead to UK settlement. You may be able to switch to another eligible visa route before it expires.

The HPI route is also subject to an annual limit of 8,000 applications, with each allocation year running from 1 November to 31 October.

Are NUS and NTU graduates eligible for the UK HPI visa?

Yes. Both NUS and NTU appear on the UK's Global Universities List for qualifications awarded between 1 November 2026 and 31 October 2027.

However, graduating from NUS or NTU does not automatically guarantee eligibility.

Your university must appear on the Global Universities List corresponding to the date your qualification was awarded.

You must also meet the remaining HPI visa requirements.

Do NUS and NTU graduates need IELTS for the UK HPI visa?

Not necessarily.

The UK HPI visa requires applicants to demonstrate English language proficiency at CEFR level B2 in Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking, unless an exemption applies.

However, you may be able to satisfy this requirement using an eligible degree taught in English.

There are two common ways to demonstrate your English language proficiency.

Option 1: Use your degree taught in English

If your NUS or NTU qualification was taught in English, you may be able to use it as evidence of your English language ability.

Because NUS and NTU are institutions outside the UK, you will need the appropriate Ecctis assessment to confirm that your qualification is equivalent to a UK bachelor's degree or higher and was taught in English.

Ecctis provides the relevant confirmation for your visa application.

Remember that HPI applicants generally need Ecctis to verify their overseas qualification even when they use a separate English language test.

Option 2: Take an approved English language test

If you cannot demonstrate English proficiency through an eligible qualification or another accepted route, you can take a Home Office-approved Secure English Language Test (SELT).

IELTS for UKVI is an approved option for applicants who need to demonstrate their English language proficiency for UK immigration.

It assesses four essential language skills:

  • Listening

  • Reading

  • Writing

  • Speaking

For the HPI visa, you must meet the applicable CEFR B2 requirement.

What IELTS score is required for the UK HPI visa?

Applicants using IELTS for UKVI to demonstrate English proficiency for the HPI visa must achieve at least Band 5.5 in each of the four IELTS components.

IELTS component

Minimum band score

Listening

5.5

Reading

5.5

Writing

5.5

Speaking

5.5

These scores correspond to the CEFR B2 English language requirement for the HPI route.

For example, an applicant who achieves Band 6.5 in Listening, 6.0 in Reading, 5.5 in Writing and 6.0 in Speaking meets the individual IELTS score thresholds.

However, an applicant who achieves an overall Band 6.0 but scores 5.0 in Writing does not meet the requirement through that result.

Before booking: Make sure you select an approved IELTS for UKVI test rather than assuming that standard IELTS Academic will satisfy a requirement for a Home Office-approved SELT.

Why consider IELTS for UKVI for your UK career?

Even if your degree can satisfy the HPI visa's English language requirement, IELTS may offer additional benefits depending on your future plans.

1. Demonstrate your English language proficiency

IELTS assesses your ability to communicate in English across Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

A recognised IELTS result can provide evidence of your language skills when applying to organisations that request formal English proficiency documentation.

However, employers and professional bodies set their own requirements, so IELTS is not compulsory for every job application.

2. Support future academic opportunities

If you later decide to pursue postgraduate studies or professional development in the UK, an IELTS result may be useful.

Universities and educational institutions commonly accept IELTS, although their required scores, accepted test types and validity rules vary.

3. Prepare for communication in the UK

IELTS preparation can help you develop skills used in professional and everyday situations.

For example, IELTS Speaking practice encourages you to express opinions, explain ideas and communicate clearly in English.

IELTS Writing preparation also develops your ability to organise information and present arguments effectively.

4. Access IELTS preparation resources in Singapore

IDP offers IELTS preparation resources, including sample questions, practice materials and guidance to help you understand the test format.

If you need IELTS for UKVI, preparing early can help you work towards the required scores before your intended application date.

5. Explore a widely recognised English language qualification

IELTS is recognised by universities, employers, immigration authorities and professional organisations worldwide.

This broad recognition may be useful if your future plans extend beyond your initial UK visa application.

However, always check the specific requirements of the organisation receiving your IELTS results.

How much does the UK HPI visa cost?

Before applying for the HPI visa, you should budget for qualification verification, the visa application fee, the immigration healthcare surcharge and your initial living expenses.

The following amounts are published by GOV.UK as of November 2026.

Expense

Published amount

Ecctis qualification verification

£252 (approximately S$434)

HPI visa application fee

£880 (approximately S$1,515)

Immigration healthcare surcharge

Usually £1,035 per year (approximately S$1,782 per year)

Financial maintenance requirement

Usually £1,270 in available savings (approximately S$2,187 per year)

For a two-year HPI visa, the standard immigration healthcare surcharge is £2,070 (approximately S$3,565).

The £1,270 maintenance requirement is not an application fee. It is money you must generally demonstrate you have available to support yourself when you arrive in the UK.

You usually need to hold the required funds for at least 28 consecutive days, with the final day of that period falling within 31 days before your application.

Some applicants who have already been in the UK with valid immigration permission for at least 12 months may be exempt from demonstrating the maintenance funds.

Fees and requirements may change, so confirm the latest amounts on GOV.UK before applying.

How can Singapore graduates apply for the UK HPI visa?

The application process involves checking your eligibility, verifying your qualification, preparing your English language evidence and submitting an online visa application.

Step 1: Check your university's eligibility

Confirm that NUS or NTU appears on the Global Universities List for the date your qualification was awarded.

Step 2: Verify your qualification through Ecctis

Apply for the appropriate Ecctis assessment to confirm your overseas qualification meets the required UK degree level.

If you are relying on your degree to prove English proficiency, make sure you obtain the appropriate English language confirmation as well.

Step 3: Prepare your English language evidence

Determine whether your qualification or another accepted route satisfies the English language requirement.

If you need an approved SELT, consider IELTS for UKVI and prepare to achieve at least Band 5.5 in each component.

Step 4: Prepare your supporting documents

Depending on your circumstances, you may need:

  • A valid passport or travel document.

  • Your Ecctis confirmation.

  • Evidence of English language proficiency.

  • Relevant academic documents.

  • Evidence of sufficient savings.

  • Other supporting documents requested by UK Visas and Immigration.

Step 5: Submit your HPI visa application

Complete the application through the official GOV.UK website, pay the required fees and follow the instructions for proving your identity and submitting documents.

Step 6: Plan your move to the UK

Once your visa is approved, you can prepare for relocation and begin exploring employment opportunities in the UK.

Remember that the HPI visa does not guarantee employment, and you must comply with the conditions attached to your immigration permission.
