There’s also PTE Core, a general English test primarily used for everyday communication purposes and accepted for immigration to Canada. It also assesses all four skills, but the focus is on functional language use in real-life situations. PTE Core is not typically used for university applications.

Finally, Secure English Language Test (SELT) is designed for those who need to prove their English proficiency for UK visas and immigration. It's available at three levels (A1, A2, and B1) and is taken online.

Results are typically available within 13 days for IELTS on Paper and three to five days for IELTS on Computer. Test-takers will receive a Test Report Form (TRF) that reflects their overall band score and individual band scores for each skill.

IELTS scores are accepted by over 12,500 bodies in over 150 countries including educational institutions, immigration authorities, and professional organisations. Universities typically set minimum IELTS score requirements, which vary depending on the programme of study and the level of English proficiency needed.

For instance, UCL requires a minimum IELTS Academic overall band score of 6.5 and a minimum of 6.0 in each component to meet their Level 1 “Standard level” English language requirements. While in Australia, Queensland University requires a minimum IELTS score of 6.5 and 6.0 in all sub-bands or equivalent including IELTS One Skill Retake.

Similarly, professional organisations for nurses, doctors, and lawyers, amongst other occupations, may require candidates to achieve a certain IELTS score to practise in English-speaking countries.

According to DavidsonMorris, an IELTS score of 6.5 would be sufficient for non-customer-facing technical roles while roles in healthcare, management, and leadership might require IELTS scores of 7.0 and higher due to the demanding nature of the job. Countries including the UK, Australia, and Canada also set minimum IELTS scores as proof of English language proficiency for visa applications.


PTE scoring and results

PTE uses a score scale ranging from 10 to 90, with 90 being the highest score. You'll receive an overall score and individual scores for each communicative skill, as well as enabling skills that contribute to your overall performance. Results are usually available within 48 hours and come with a score report containing a detailed breakdown of your performance, including your strengths and areas for improvement.

Similar to IELTS, universities, immigration authorities, and professional organisations worldwide use PTE scores to assess the English language proficiency of international students and applicants. Each institution sets its own minimum PTE score requirements for different programmes, visas, or certificates.

Australian immigration requires a minimum score of 65 for each of the 4 PTE components, while Canadian immigration specifies that PTE Core scores must correspond to Canadian Language Benchmarks (CLB) for English.
