Delivery Format

Complete the Listening, Reading and Writing parts of the test using a computer and the Speaking test face-to-face with an IELTS examiner.

The sample questions for the IELTS Academic Writing test consist of 2 tasks.

Task 1: You are presented with a graph, table, chart or diagram and are asked to describe and explain data, describe the stages of a process, how something works or describe an object or event. You need to write at least 150 words in about 20 minutes.

Task 2: You are asked to write an essay in response to a point of view, argument or problem. You need to write at least 250 words in about 40 minutes.

What to expect on test day

Arrival & registration: After arriving at the test centre, you will first check in with your ID, go through security and lastly you will be assigned your computer. 

Test environment: You’ll be seated in a quiet room with individual booths, noise-cancelling headphones, and a user-friendly interface on the screen. 

Test order: Usually, Listening → Reading → Writing on the computer, then the Speaking test (either on the same day or up to a week before/after). 

Speaking test: This is a one to one test with a certified IELTS examiner. The test lasts between 11 to 14 minutes, and there are three parts to the test. The test is recorded for quality and assurance purposes.  

Tips for success

  • Practice typing as all three tests Listening, Reading and Writing require typing.  

  • Use official IELTS on computer practice tests as getting used to their interface and question layout will help you get the score you need. 

  • Time management is a crucial step to learn when you are preparing for your test. Practice answering within the limits using the on-screen timer. 

  • Familiarise yourself with on-screen tools like highlighting, using a word counter in the Writing test or navigating between different tasks.  

  • Practice simulating Listening with headphones.
