The UK job market continues to be open to international skilled talent through eligible job shortage lists and more targeted, high-value work pathways. There is also clear strategic focus in expanding sectors like artificial intelligence, green technologies, life sciences and advanced manufacturing.
In order to qualify for an eligible pathway to work and live there, you’ll have to prove your proficiency with an English test for UK visas, specifically IELTS for UKVI (UK Visas and Immigration).
The IELTS for UKVI is a Secure English Language Test (SELT) approved by the UK Home Office for visa applications to the UK.
The format of the test is the same as the regular IELTS test. However, the Test Report Form will be slightly different and the test follows extra security protocols to ensure the test taker’s authenticity.
IELTS test formats and types for the UK
There are various IELTS test formats that you need to be aware of when applying to work and obtain PR in the UK.
IELTS for UKVI Academic is the test you’ll need to sit if you are looking to obtain a student visa in your undergraduate or postgraduate journey.
IELTS for UKVI General Training is the test required for migration purposes.
IELTS Life Skills (A1/A2/B1) is a test of your speaking and listening abilities as part of the UKVI application in certain visa categories.
Minimum IELTS score requirements for working in the UK
1. IELTS scores for Graduate visa
If you're applying for the Graduate visa on or after 1 January 2027, you will be allowed to work and stay in the UK for 18 months after completing your Bachelor’s degree, postgraduate degree or other eligible course. PhD graduates can receive 3 years for length of stay.
This pathway offers valuable opportunities in professional growth, especially if you have good connectivity to work placements in the UK’s vibrant job market after studying.
To qualify for the Graduate visa, you’ll need to be residing in the UK at the time of application and hold an existing Student visa.
You may have already submitted your proof of English knowledge with a minimum IELTS score during your visa application when initially pursuing higher education in the UK, so you don’t have to take another English language test. For most bachelor's degrees, you will have to obtain an overall IELTS score of at least 6.0 or 6.5, while for most master’s degrees, you need an IELTS score of at least 6.5 or 7.0.
Whether it’s work placements or industry internships, if you intend to explore staying in the UK after your studies, do stay informed of potential Graduate visa updates and plan accordingly so you’re able to make the most of its benefits.
2. IELTS scores for High Potential Individual visa
The High Potential Individual (HPI) visa is one option to help you find work in the UK as an overseas graduate from an eligible top-ranked university in the last 5 years, without needing a job offer or employer sponsorship.
You will be able to live and work in the UK for up to 2 years, or 3 years for PhD holders, and comes with a yearly limit on applications. The application period takes place between 1 November and 31 October.
If you do not have a UK degree-level qualification or an English-taught degree from overseas that meets the English test requirement, you will need to take a Secure English Language Test (SELT) like IELTS for UKVI and receive CEFR B2 level, or a minimum IELTS score of 5.5 in each of the four test components.
You can switch to a Skilled Worker Visa before the HPI visa expires.
3. IELTS scores for Skilled Worker visa
The Skilled Worker visa allows you to stay and work in the UK with an approved employer for up to 5 years. If you’re a recent graduate, this route is another alternative to the Graduate visa pathway.
The UK also provides the Temporary Shortage Occupation List (TSL), which allows jobs below RQF Level 6 (the skill threshold required for the Skilled Worker route) to qualify for Skilled Worker visa sponsorship. The list is accessible online and reviewed regularly for industries facing critical worker shortages in the UK.
In order to qualify for the Skilled Worker visa, you will need:
a job offer and employer sponsorship in an eligible occupation
English proficiency test results at CEFR level B2, or an IELTS for UKVI score of at least 5.5 in all four test components
First-time applicants must be paid an annual salary of £41,700 or your job’s standard going rate (whichever is higher), to support accommodation and living expenses.
However, lower salary thresholds of at least £33,400, and between 70%-90% of the job’s standard going rate, can apply in certain cases:
Under 26 year-olds, studying, in professional training or a recent graduate
Hold a PhD level qualification in STEM relevant to the job
Hold a PHD level qualification in any other subject with a salary of at least £37,500
Hold a postdoctoral position in science or higher education
With the Skilled Worker Visa, you get more opportunities to transition to permanent residency (or ‘Indefinite Leave to Remain’) after 5 years, with the option of bringing dependents (spouse and children).
4. IELTS scores for Health and Care Worker visa
The Health and Care Worker visa allows medical professionals such as doctors, nurses and allied health professionals to work and stay in the UK, excluding social care workers applying from outside the country. They will have to work with the NHS (National Health Service) or an NHS supplier. The NHS is the public healthcare system in the United Kingdom.
The visa lasts for up to 5 years, after which you may be eligible to apply for indefinite leave to remain, or PR in the UK.
2026 English test requirements are updated for new overseas applicants of the Health and Care Worker visa:
You need at least level B2 on the CEFR scale (previously B1), scoring a minimum IELTS 5.5 in each of the four test sections
CEFR B2 is equivalent to an IELTS for UKVI overall score of 5.5 to 6.5
An English proficiency test score is not required if you’ve already passed an English language assessment accepted by a relevant professional body as a practising doctor, dentist, nurse or midwife.
5. IELTS scores for Innovator Founder visa
The Innovator Founder visa is perfect if you are a graduate or entrepreneur looking to set up and run an innovative, scalable business in the UK, which must be endorsed by an approved body.
With the visa, you’ll be able to stay for up to 3 years. After 3 years, you can apply to extend or be eligible to apply for indefinite leave to remain, or PR in the UK.
To qualify, you’ll need to prove your knowledge of the English language at a higher level. You will have to obtain a level B2 on the CEFR scale, equivalent to an IELTS for UKVI overall score between 5.5 to 6.5. You must also achieve the same scores in each of the four skills.
Getting PR
In order to successfully migrate to the UK, there are two routes you can take.
The first is applying for indefinite leave to remain (ILR), or PR after 5 years of working in the UK. English language test requirements for this route is set to rise to CEFR B2 level (IELTS 5.5 score for all four test sections), from 26 March 2027. Until then, you will need to obtain a Pass result in IELTS Life Skills B1 (Listening and Speaking tests only).
The second option is applying via the Family Visa route for indefinite leave to remain if you have family in the UK. You will need to obtain a Pass result in IELTS Life Skills A1 (Listening and Speaking tests only).
