I know the feeling as I learned English long before internet or social media and there was no one around to speak in English with. It can be frustrating, but the upside is there are a few things you can do. There are sone very good language learning forums or language exchange platforms online where people get together, share ideas and have chat rooms or speaking clubs where they speak. Also, more and more chatbots are becoming available for free speaking practice. If you are interested in computer games and online gaming, there is also some opportunity there to communicate with other players in real-time. Last, but not at all least, solo practice of talking, recording yourself and listening back to yourself is a proven technique.

I know it’s a tough task. I had the same experience myself when I was learning English many years ago, but it’s much better times now. Find people online who would be willing to speak with you in English. Also there are chatbots available these days that you can speak with. Generative AI (e.g. Chat GPT) may also be helpful.

Don’t worry. It’s still possible to achieve a high band score in IELTS Speaking – even if you’re not living an English-speaking country. To improve your speaking skills, try an online language exchange. Many of these are free or only involve a small cost. They’re a great way to improve your fluency or try out new phrases in a friendly, low-pressure environment. You can also practise IELTS Speaking topics on your own. Record yourself on your phone. When you listen back, think about what areas you can improve. Want to hear some more ideas from someone who has been there before? Tune into episode 10 of our video podcast and listen to May Huynh who shares how she got a band 8 while preparing for IELTS in Vietnam.

There is no definite answer because it depends on how much you practise, which skills you need to improve most in and in which areas (e.g. grammar, vocabulary, or pronunciation e.g.). What is clear is that you need to work out what you need to work most on and practice daily.

It depends on how much work you are prepared to do. Consider setting some goals to help you stay motivated as you need to be consistent in your practice. Remember, there is no short cut, so be prepared to put in the effort.

I recommend selecting one of the IELTS Approved Preparation Providers in New Zealand. These schools are officially endorsed by IDP, meaning they use quality teaching methods, have qualified IELTS teachers, and offer practice materials specific to the test. Some excellent options are Worldwide School of English in Auckland, PM Training School in Manukau, and Bay Learning Academy in Mount Maunganui. You can see the full list of approved providers and find one near you here: IELTS Approved Preparation Providers – New Zealand

In New Zealand, the Teaching Council of Aotearoa New Zealand is the organisation that allows you to combine results from more than one test (even across providers) as long as each skill meets the required band and all results are within the validity period. Teaching Council – English language competency FAQs Note this is different from IELTS One Skill Retake (OSR). Many organisations (for example, Immigration New Zealand) accept OSR, but that is not the same as combining separate TRFs. Always check the policy of the organisation you’re applying to.

There is one way to know and that is to look at how IELTS is scored and what band 9 means. I highly recommend having a look at IELTS Scoring . It will give you a good idea of what kind of ability and knowledge you should show in the test to reach the highest score.

I'd like to say first that there is no specific grammar for IELTS you need to focus on, but there is thenowledge of grammar of English, so basically anything you do that means you listen and watch in English more, you read in English more, you use English more in speaking and writing improves your grammar. The other exercise that really helps is to use books on grammar, or grammar exercises online and focus on one grammar lesson for a day or two and do as many exercised you can. This directly improves your grammar.

No, you are not able to wear a watch during your IELTS test. This covers all forms of watches, not just smart watches. There will be clocks and/or regular time checks provided throughout your test so you can accurately manage your time.

It’s best to use the surname of the person you’re writing to with the appropriate salutation. For example, you can start the letter ‘Dear Mr. Smith’ if you’re writing to a man. For women, you can use ‘Dear Mrs. Smith’ or ‘Miss. Smith’ depending on whether she is married or single. If you’re unsure, simply use ‘Ms. Smith.’ You can end the letter with ‘Yours sincerely’ followed by your full name. If you don’t know the name of the person you’re writing to, simply start the letter with ‘Dear Sir or Madam’ and finish with ‘Yours faithfully’ followed by your full name. Don’t forget to add a comma after each greeting and closing remark e.g. Dear Sir or Madam,
