No, it's a misconception that taking the IELTS test in another country is easier or harder. Your test is marked to the same standard wherever you take it. Besides, IELTS is very transparent about how we mark your test: the marking criteria examiners use are available for you to look at, too. IELTS Examiners are highly trained and follow global standards. That makes the IELTS test is fair and consistent, and the reason why more than 12,500 organisations around the world trust IELTS scores.

IELTS preparation classes are a good option if you’d like feedback on your writing and speaking. A teacher can help you identify your strengths and weaknesses and give you advice on how you can improve before you take your test. But don’t worry if you can’t make it to classes - there are also plenty of ways to prepare by yourself. Just make sure you choose official IELTS preparation materials, which you can find on our website . If you can’t attend classes, a self-paced online IELTS preparation course might suit you better. Our IELTS by IDP app offers two free taster courses by Macquarie University and E2 Test Prep.

Good question! That depends on the country you are looking to move to. For example, in Australia you can generally use either IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training. However, immigration authorities in Canada usually only accept IELTS General Training. So, always check with the immigration authorities (or a qualified migration agent) which IELTS test you require before you book your test. Legislation about immigration and visas changes frequently. When you’re looking to move to another country, it’s important to check the relevant government website for changes that may apply to you.

In terms of content and test questions, neither of the formats is easier than the other. It all depends on which format makes you feel most comfortable. Some people are happier writing with pencil and paper, whereas others feel most at home on a computer typing the answers. Whatever makes you feel most comfortable will be the best option for you.

A lot of universities and organisations accept IELTS Online test scores. However, if you’re taking IELTS for immigration purposes, you’ll need to take the test at an official IELTS test centre.

The IELTS test measures a person's English language proficiency. So, you might want to ask if English is difficult. But it also depends on what band score you want to achieve and how close it is to your English level.

IELTS is trusted by more than 12,500 organisations around the world. And all these organisations set their own entry requirements. That means that the minimum IELTS scores you require for a visa in Australia can be different than the minimum scores you need for a visa in Canada or New Zealand. It also means that different universities have different IELTS score requirements. So, always check with the institution with the organisation where you want to use your IELTS results what the requirements are.
