IELTS results are officially recognised as valid for 2 years from the test date. This reflects your English proficiency at the time of testing. Most universities, employers and immigration authorities request for results taken within this 2-year period. If your result is older, you may need to take the test again — check directly with your chosen organisation to confirm their specific requirements.

How long are IELTS scores valid for?

IELTS results are officially recognised as valid for 2 years from the test date, and most organisations and governments follow this timeframe. It’s always best to check with the institution first on what results they will accept.

What does IELTS validity mean?

IELTS validity refers to the 2-year period during which your IELTS Academic or IELTS General Training results are recognised as the most current proof of your English proficiency. It also relates to whether an organisation accepts your score at the time you apply.

Within these 2 years, you can:

  • View your IELTS results online

  • Get official confirmation of your results with one copy of an IELTS Test Report Form, with your test date displayed

  • Request your IDP IELTS test centre to send your IELTS Test Report Form to interested organisations by postal mail (up to 5 institutions free-of-charge)

  • Share your test results by e-delivery with unlimited organisations

What happens with IELTS results beyond 2 years:

  • No longer accepted as official proof of your English proficiency by most institutions

  • You may need to retake the test for updated scores

  • Some universities or institutions may choose to recognise IELTS results up to 3 years old

  • Organisations accepting older results may ask for further proof that you have maintained your standard of English

Why does IELTS have a validity period?

IELTS results are generally valid for 2 years from the date of your test, which is essential to show universities, employers and immigration authorities your current level of English.

Research shows that your skills can gradually decline the less you use any language as a non-native. This is known as the second-language loss phenomenon.

It’s also the reason why most institutions follow this 2-year time limit on score validity, as IELTS reliably tests your language standards required for admissions and visa applications.

IELTS validity requirements vary by organisation

While your IELTS score is valid for up to 2 years officially, specific organisations may accept older scores or have different eligibility requirements based on your visa application type.

IELTS will allow organisations to verify all Test Report Forms they receive are genuine, for a maximum period of 3 years. This means you can still use IELTS results beyond 2 years if accepted.

For example, IELTS results for tests taken before 7 August 2025 are valid for up to 3 years for Australian skilled visas.

Organisations that may set their own requirements include:

🎓

Universities or Educational Institutions

🏛️

Governments or Immigration Authorities

🪪

Professional Registration Bodies

💼

Employers

Many organisations require IELTS results taken within the last two years. However, requirements can differ depending on factors such as:

  • Country

  • Visa category

  • Course type

  • Professional registration rules

When you may be asked for a new IELTS result

You may need a new IELTS result if you:

  • Did not meet the minimum IELTS scores set by the university or organisation

  • Do not hold a valid IELTS Test Report Form

  • Reapply after a long break from study or work

  • Apply to a different institution or country

  • Update a visa or migration application

  • Apply for professional registration

  • Change your study or immigration pathway

Because policies can change, test takers should always check directly with the organisation they are applying to.

Can IELTS scores be extended or renewed?

Is it possible to renew an IELTS score?

No. Your IELTS Test Report Form containing your official scores cannot be extended or revalidated. There is no official IELTS renewal process. If you come across “IELTS renewal” when searching for English test requirements, they usually need you to take the test again.

If your last test was more than 2 years ago and your organisation requires a valid result, you will have to book and complete a new IELTS test.

Is there an IELTS renewal fee?

There is no renewal fee involved. If you need a new result, you must:

  • Book a new IELTS test

  • Pay the standard IELTS test fee

  • Sit the full test

To receive a valid, new score, you must take the full IELTS test again.

What to do if your IELTS score is no longer accepted?

If your IELTS result no longer meets your organisation’s latest English language requirement, you will have to retake all four IELTS test sections. You can continue your application once you receive the Test Report Form with a new overall band score.
