For many Filipino professionals, the United Kingdom is more than just a dream destination. It's where careers grow, families find new opportunities, and skills are valued. Nurses, care workers, engineers, and IT professionals from the Philippines continue to build their futures there.

If the UK is part of your plan, there's an important change you need to know about. The English language requirement for the Skilled Worker visa is now higher. Here's what changed, which test you need, and how you can prepare for it.

What changed?

Since 8 January 2026, most first-time applicants for a UK Skilled Worker visa must demonstrate English language ability at CEFR Level B2, an increase from the previous B1-level requirement.

CEFR, or the Common European Framework of Reference, is an internationally recognized scale used to describe language ability. B2 is one level higher than B1 and reflects an upper-intermediate ability to communicate confidently and effectively in workplace and everyday situations.

Here are the key points to remember:

  • You must meet the B2 requirement in all four language skills. Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking will be assessed separately, so a high score in one skill does not offset low scores in the others.

  • The change primarily affects new Skilled Worker visa applications. If you already hold a Skilled Worker visa and met the old B1-level requirement, different rules may apply when you apply for an extension. Be sure to check the latest updates to be guided accordingly.

  • The test must be approved by the UK Home Office. If you're taking a language test to prove your English proficiency, it must be approved by the UK Home Office. For many applicants, this means taking IELTS for UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI), a Secure English Language Test (SELT) accepted for UK visa applications.

What B2 English looks like at work

A B2 level of English means you can communicate confidently and independently in most workplace situations. You can follow meetings and discussions related to your role, understand reports, instructions and workplace documents, and participate in conversations without relying heavily on others for clarification.

At this level, you're also expected to write clear emails, complete forms and documentation accurately, and produce short reports or summaries when needed. In conversations, you should be able to explain your ideas, provide reasons for your opinions, ask relevant questions, and respond appropriately to colleagues, managers and clients.

In practical terms, B2 English demonstrates that you can use English effectively in your day-to-day work, collaborate with colleagues, and handle professional interactions with a reasonable degree of confidence and accuracy.

Which IELTS test do you need?

For UK Skilled Worker visa applications, you need IELTS for UKVI to prove your English language ability. IELTS for UKVI uses the same test format, content, and scoring system as standard IELTS tests, but it is delivered under additional and more stringent security procedures approved by the government of the United Kingdom.

IELTS for UKVI is available in different versions:

  • IELTS for UKVI Academic – This one is typically used by people applying to study at undergraduate or postgraduate level in the UK.

  • IELTS for UKVI General Training – This particular exam is used for work and migration purposes.

  • IELTS for UKVI Life Skills – This one focuses on Speaking and Listening only, so you cannot use this for your Skilled Worker visa application.

Now you might be asking, “Am I only allowed to take IELTS for UKVI General Training for my Skilled Worker visa application?”

Not quite.

Although IELTS for UKVI General Training is often the test people associate with work and migration, Skilled Worker visa applicants are not necessarily limited to this version. The key consideration is whether your test result can be used to demonstrate the required level of English proficiency for your application.

In other words, the UK government is primarily interested in your ability to meet the English language requirement. That's why understanding the required CEFR level and choosing a UKVI-approved IELTS test are both important when planning your application.

What score should you aim for?

For Skilled Worker visa applications, a B2-level proficiency is generally equivalent to an IELTS for UKVI score of at least 5.5 in each of the four language skills: Listening, Reading, Writing and Speaking.

It's important to remember, too, that the requirement applies to each skill individually, so a higher score in one area cannot compensate for a lower score in another. For example, achieving a 7.0 in Speaking or Reading cannot make up for a 5.0 in Writing or Listening.

While meeting the minimum language requirement may be enough for visa purposes, some employers and professional bodies may set higher English language standards depending on the role. Healthcare professionals, teachers, and other regulated occupations, for instance, may need to satisfy additional language requirements before they can work in the UK.

Before booking your IELTS for UKVI test with IDP, be sure to take time to confirm the score requirements for both your visa application and your intended profession. Knowing your target score in advance can help you prepare more effectively and avoid unnecessary delays during the application process.

How can you prepare for IELTS for UKVI?

Preparing for IELTS for UKVI is about more than just studying English. It also means understanding how the test works, building confidence across all four language skills, and developing habits that help you use English more naturally in everyday situations. The earlier you start preparing, the more time you'll have to identify areas for improvement and work toward your target score. Here are a few tips:

Learn about the test format

Take time to familiarize yourself with the structure of the test before test day. Understanding the types of questions you'll encounter, how each section is timed, and what examiners are looking for can help reduce anxiety and improve your performance. Free preparation materials and practice tests can also help you identify which skills need the most attention.

Practice all four skills

Remember that the English language requirement applies to Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Because each skill is assessed separately, it's important to prepare for all four areas rather than focusing only on your strengths. If you find one skill more challenging than the others, dedicate additional time to improving it as part of your study plan.

Use English at work and at home

One of the best ways to improve your English is to use it regularly. Read emails and articles in English, listen to podcasts, watch English-language videos, and practice explaining your job or daily activities aloud. Even small, consistent habits can help strengthen your vocabulary, fluency, and confidence over time.

Try our IELTS Mock Tests

IELTS Mock Tests can help you experience what it's like to take the IELTS test in a realistic setting. You'll become familiar with the testing environment, understand what to expect on the day, and gain valuable practice under test-like conditions. For many test takers, this can help reduce nerves and improve confidence before the actual exam.

IDP holds IELTS Mock Tests regularly -- usually every Monday -- at our offices and shared labs. They're free to join, but pre-registration is encouraged.

With enough preparation, achieving your target score can feel much more manageable. Focus on consistent practice, make use of available preparation resources, and give yourself enough time to build confidence in each skill before test day.
