Introduction
When going abroad to study, work, or migrate, you can't just pop up at the airport with your passport and ticket. There's a lengthy process you have to go through to legally visit your desired country as an international student, overseas worker, or migrant. One important requirement is your English proficiency test, which essentially demonstrates your ability to communicate with locals through the global lingua franca.
The International English Language Testing System (IELTS) has long been the go-to choice because it's widely trusted and accepted by a vast network of educational institutions, government bodies, and companies. However, new alternatives have emerged over the last few years, just like the Pearson Test of English (PTE), which was introduced in 2009.
Pearson Test of English (PTE): An Overview
As the name implies, PTE was developed by Pearson, the world-renowned textbook publishing house. Just like IELTS, PTE is designed to assess the Reading, Listening, Writing, and Speaking skills of non-native English speakers, but what makes it different is its fully computer-based approach. The test itself is done on a computer inside their testing centers, and the scoring will be powered by AI[1] (with some help from human experts). However, although PTE testing and scoring are fully automated, results are still typically released within 2 to 5 working days. This is a little slower compared to IELTS, which releases results in 1 to 2 business days for computer-based tests. When it comes to prices, PTE and IELTS are not necessarily apart. Here's a breakdown of the latest PTE prices*, according to their website[2]:
PTE Test Type | Price |
PTE Academic – Accepted worldwide for study, work, and migration | US$240 (about ₱14,000)** |
PTE Core – Recognized by the Canadian government for immigration and citizenship applications | US$240 (about ₱14,000)** |
PTE UKVI - Typically needed for UK study, migration, and citizenship applications | |
PTE Academic UKVI | US$240 (about ₱14,000)** |
PTE Home A1 | US$200 (about ₱11,700)** |
PTE Home A2 | US$200 (about ₱11,700)** |
PTE Home B1 | US$200 (about ₱11,700)** |
*As of October 2025
**Rates from October 2025 (US$1.00 ≈ ₱58.00)
IELTS prices are a little lower, although they're in the same ballpark. The IELTS Standard Test (Academic and General Training) is slightly more affordable at ₱13,660, but IELTS for UKVI can be a bit more expensive at ₱14,480. The A1/B1 tests (for UKVI) are also cheaper at ₱ 10,200.
IELTS: Why It's Still Better
Some people think that it won't make a lot of difference whether they choose IELTS or PTE for their overseas goals. But this isn't necessarily true because IELTS offers more perks, starting with convenience in terms of testing locations.
Currently, PTE has six test centers [2] in the Philippines, including the ones in city centers like Metro Manila and Cebu City. If you don't live near those areas, you might find it hard to visit the location just to take your exam. You won't have to experience that with IELTS. As of October 2025, IDP has almost 30 testing centers and shared laboratories that you can visit for your test; this means that no matter where you are, there's an IELTS facility that's accessible to you.
Beyond the sheer number of test centers, IELTS also provides test-takers with a choice in how they want to take the test: on paper or on a computer. This flexibility allows you to select the format that best suits your learning style and preferences.
IELTS on Paper is the traditional format that many test-takers are familiar with. In this format, you'll complete the Reading, Listening, and Writing sections using a pen and paper. Some test-takers prefer this format because they find it easier to highlight and annotate passages for their Reading exam. Physically writing out essays might also be easier for some people, as opposed to using the computer.
On the other hand, IELTS on Computer offers a more modern and efficient testing experience. In this format, you'll complete the Reading, Listening, and Writing sections on a computer, which is more convenient for many people, especially those who are predisposed to using modern equipment at work and in school. Some test-takers also find it easier to type their essays on a computer, as it allows for easier editing and revision.
Another key advantage of IELTS on Computer is that the results are typically available faster, usually within just 1 to 2 days. This can be a significant benefit if you need your results quickly for your school, work, or migration application.
The Need for Human Interaction (and Connection)
Regardless of whether you choose IELTS on Paper or IELTS on Computer, the Speaking test will remain face-to-face with a certified examiner. The examiner will either be present at the testing center or be available via video call.
This emphasis on human interaction in the IELTS Speaking test offers a different approach compared to PTE, which uses a fully automated scoring system for its Speaking section. While PTE's AI-powered scoring aims to provide objective and consistent results, the IELTS Speaking test leverages the expertise of a trained examiner.
In the IELTS Speaking test, the examiner can assess a range of factors that contribute to effective communication, such as the ability to engage in natural conversation and adapt to different communication styles. The examiner can also provide prompts and follow-up questions, encouraging test-takers to elaborate on their ideas and demonstrate their speaking abilities more fully.
The face-to-face format of the IELTS Speaking test also allows for a more personalized assessment experience. The examiner can adjust their approach, providing constructive feedback and creating a supportive environment.
IELTS vs. PTE: A Quick Summary
Feature | IELTS | Pearson Test of English |
Skills Assessed | Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking | Reading, Listening, Writing, Speaking |

All in all, IELTS and PTE have their own sets of advantages and disadvantages. PTE excels in providing a fully computer-based testing experience, so it's a great choice if you're comfortable with technology and prefer automated assessments.
However, IELTS still offers a more comprehensive and flexible approach to English proficiency testing, especially with its extensive network of test centers and choice of paper-based or computer-based formats. The face-to-face Speaking Test also provides test-takers with opportunities to elaborate on their answers and truly interact with the examiner.
Ultimately, the best choice depends on your individual needs and preferences. Our tip is for you to research thoroughly and select the test that best aligns with your goals. Good luck!
