There are specific eligibility requirements to immigrate to Alberta as a worker, recent graduate, entrepreneur, or business.
The Alberta Advantage Immigration Program (AAIP), run by the governments of Alberta and Canada, is an economic immigration program that nominates people for permanent residence. Nominees must have skills to fill job shortages or be planning to buy or start a business in Alberta. Find out more here. AAIP has 4 streams for foreign workers who are living and working in Alberta, or planning to live and work here.
Here are the IELTS requirements for the following streams for foreign workers:
Tourism and Hospitality Stream: For qualified candidates who live and work in Alberta and have a full-time job offer to continue working with an Alberta tourism and hospitality sector employer. You must demonstrate you meet the following IELTS test scores:
minimum of 4 for each English language skill
or minimum of 4 for each French language skill
Official test results must be less than 2 years old at the time your application was submitted. The date used to determine the age of your test results is the date you took the test, not the date your test results were released.
Alberta Opportunity Stream: For qualified candidates who live and work in Alberta and have a job offer from an Alberta employer. You must demonstrate that you meet the following language test score in English or French, on a single test result.
National Occupational Classification (NOC) TEER category | Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) test score required |
|---|---|
If you are working in an NOC 0, 1, 2 or 3 occupation | Minimum of 5 for each English language skill |
If you are working in an NOC 4 or 5 occupation | Minimum of 4 for each English language skill |
Alberta Express Entry Stream: For qualified candidates who have profiles in the IRCC's Express Entry pool that are aligned with minimum requirements, and provincial economic, sector and occupational priorities. The following minimum assessment requirements apply to all applicants:
you must have an active Express Entry profile in the federal Express Entry pool
you meet the criteria of at least one of the federal immigration programs managed by Express Entry:
Canadian Experience Class (language requirements: you must meet the minimum score in all 4 abilities: writing, reading, listening, speaking)
Federal Skilled Trades Program (language requirements: you must meet the minimum score in all 4 abilities: writing, reading, listening, speaking)
Federal Skilled Worker Program (language requirements: you must meet the minimum score in all 4 abilities: writing, reading, listening, speaking)
you must have a minimum Comprehensive Ranking System score of 300
your primary occupation in your federal Express Entry profile must be included as part of a specific Express Entry stream pathway, or is identified as an occupation connected to a provincial economic, sector or occupational priority
you must intend to and be able to live and work permanently in Alberta and have stated an interest in immigrating permanently to Alberta.
Rural Renewal Stream: Communities must apply for and become designated before they can recruit and endorse qualified candidates. Temporary foreign workers who have a job offer from an Alberta employer in a designated community and an endorsement letter from a designated community can then apply.
Language requirements: Applicants must confirm TEER Category for their job offer/occupation in the NOC 2021 version and use the TEER Category to determine this minimum language score:
National Occupational Classification (NOC) TEER category | Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) test score required | |
|---|---|---|
If your job offer is for an NOC 0, 1, 2 or 3 occupations | Minimum of 5 for each English language skill | |
If your job offer is for an NOC 4 or 5 occupation | Minimum of 4 for each English language skill |
Here are the IELTS requirements for the following streams for entrepreneurs:
Rural Entrepreneur Stream: For entrepreneurs who want to start a business or buy an existing business in a rural Alberta community. Language requirements: Minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level of 4 for each English language skill: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Official test results must be less than 2 years old at the time your Expression of Interest is submitted.
Graduate Entrepreneur Stream: For international graduates of approved Alberta post-secondary institutions who want to start a business or buy an existing business. Language requirements: Minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level of 7 for each English language skill: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Official test results must be less than 2 years old at the time your Expression of Interest is submitted.
Farm Stream: For experienced farmers who plan to buy or start a farm in Alberta.
Foreign Graduate Entrepreneur Stream: For foreign graduates who have a degree from a post-secondary institution outside of Canada and want to launch a start-up enterprise and innovative business. Language requirements: Minimum Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) level of 5 for each English language skill: reading, writing, listening, and speaking. Official test results must be less than two years old at the time your Expression of Interest is submitted.
If you are planning to immigrate to Alberta, understanding how your English proficiency is assessed is crucial. This is because applying to many of Canada’s immigration programs requires applicants to prove their English language ability.
The Canadian Language Benchmark (CLB) is a national standard used to measure language proficiency for immigration and citizenship purposes. A lower CLB score means the applicant cannot communicate and understand English, while a higher CLB score suggests that the applicant is proficient in English. The required minimum level and number of points you get for your language skills will depend on the specific program you are applying to.
Check out this list of minimum CLB levels an applicant needs for all four language abilities. Test results must be less than two years old when submitting an application for permanent residence.
IELTS is entirely compatible with CLB. To find out how your IELTS score aligns with CLB and how it matters for various immigration programs, visit this page.
Colleges in Alberta require all students to be proficient in the English language so they can participate in classroom education. To successfully apply and be accepted at an institution in Alberta, you'll need to complete English proficiency testing designed to showcase your ability to communicate in English.
