What is IELTS on Computer?
When you take the IELTS on Computer, you will do the Reading, Listening, and Writing parts of the test using a computer. All answers will be typed on the screen. You will also be able to write notes on a notes sheet during the Listening test. The IELTS Speaking remains the same, with a face-to-face interview with an examiner.
You can choose to take IELTS on a computer for both the General Training and Academic tests. The test format, question types, time allocated to each test part and content is the same for both IELTS on Computer test and the IELTS on paper test, which has been discontinued.
Taking IELTS on a computer has many benefits. For example, your results arrive a lot faster and are typically available within 1-2 days.
What is Writing on Paper?
Writing on Paper enables you to take your IELTS test on computer and complete the Writing component by hand. If you choose Writing on Paper, your Writing component tasks will be shown on screen, but you’ll complete the tasks in pen on an IELTS Writing Answer Sheet.
The option of Writing on Paper increases flexibility and benefits those with different levels of digital confidence.
Is Writing on Paper approved by the IRCC?
Yes, IELTS on Computer (Writing on Paper) is approved by Immigration, Refugees and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) as one of the accepted tests for language proficiency for the Post Graduate Work Permit as well as Permanent Residency.
When are results available for Writing on Paper?
You will receive your results within 5 days after your test date. The IELTS Test Results Form (TRF) will not specify that the Writing on Paper option was chosen.
Can I make notes during the Writing on Paper test?
Yes. IELTS on Computer provides note-taking and highlighting functions. You can also write notes on the login details sheet you receive at the beginning of the test.
Can I do all parts of the test on the same day?
The Listening, Reading, and Writing parts of the test are completed immediately after each other on the same day. The Speaking test will be taken on the same day, either before or after the other three parts of the test.

You must bring the same passport or national identity card that you used to book your IELTS test. You must leave all your personal belongings outside the examination room in a secure area or locker. Mobile phones, pagers, and smart watches must be switched off and left with your personal belongings.
If you keep mobile phones or electronic devices with you, you will be disqualified.
Why can't I use my own headphones for the IELTS Listening test?
Headphones will always be provided for all IELTS on Computer formats. You can ask your centre to use headphones or special amplification equipment to help you hear the recording, but you will need to ask at least two weeks before your test date.
