Love the convenience of taking IELTS on computer, but prefer writing by hand? Well, IELTS now has a new option for you.

The new IELTS on computer (Writing on paper) test lets you take the IELTS test on computer (Listening and Reading) and complete the Writing component by hand. If you choose to take the Writing on Paper option, during your IELTS test, the Writing component tasks will be shown on screen, but you will be given an IELTS Writing Answer Sheet and a pen to complete the tasks.

If writing comes more naturally than typing for you, the Writing on paper option can help you to give your best performance on test day.

Here’s the difference between completing the Writing component on computer and on paper:

  • Writing on computer:  Writing questions appear on screen; you type your answers on computer.

  • Writing on paper:  Writing questions appear on screen; you write your answers by hand on paper.

 Everything else stays the same.

Whichever option you choose:

  • Listening and Reading are completed on computer.

  • Speaking remains face-to-face with an examiner.

  • The same IELTS skills are assessed.

  • The test construct remains the same.

  • Institutions interpret your results in the same way.

The task types, scoring and time allocation of the Writing component are the same whether you take it on computer or write on paper. The only difference is that you write your responses by hand. Writing on Paper is available for both IELTS Academic and IELTS General Training.
