Why IELTS results may be delayed or withheld

At IELTS, ensuring the accuracy, fairness, and integrity of every test result is our top priority. That’s why we have multi-layered security and quality control processes before, during, and after test day.

Occasionally, test results may be withheld beyond the standard 13-day release period to allow for additional checks. These checks help protect the credibility of IELTS results for over 12,500 institutions worldwide that rely on them.

Here are a few common reasons why your IELTS result may be delayed or withheld:

  • Additional validation of test performance

  • Random quality assurance checks

  • Suspected malpractice or test irregularity

  • Technical issues requiring investigation

What you can do if your IELTS result is withheld

If you’ve received a notice stating that your IELTS result has been delayed or withheld, here are your next steps:

  • Contact your test centre: Get in touch with the test centre where you took your IELTS test. They can provide more information.

  • Review IELTS terms and conditions: The reasons for result delays or withholdings are clearly outlined in the IELTS Test Terms and Conditions.*

*From Clause 5.10 and 5.11: IELTS Test Partners reserve the right to withhold or cancel results if there are concerns about the reliability of the outcome or suspected breaches of testing policies.

Keep track of your status

Monitor your email and candidate portal for updates on your result status.

Delays are typically resolved as quickly as possible, but timelines can vary depending on the nature of the review.

  • Appeal an investigation – if your result was withheld due to an investigation, you may appeal for further review.
