IELTS test takers in Canada often choose to take the IELTS on Computer because they are aware of its impact on their academic and career goals. It offers a modern test-taking experience with faster results, typically within 48 hours of taking the test. One of the things test-takers focus on is managing time effectively, because of how this can have an impact on ensuring a high score.

The IELTS on Computer requires a different approach to pacing and efficiency. This blog explores key IELTS time management tips, strategies to approach multiple-choice questions, efficient typing techniques, and the importance of practice. Here are a few tips that can make a huge difference to how you prepare for the IELTS.

Make Sure you Understand IELTS on Computer Time Limits

Before looking at strategies, it is essential for test takers to know the time allocation for each section:

  • Listening: 30 minutes (+2 minutes to check answers)

  • Reading: 60 minutes

  • Writing: 60 minutes

  • Speaking: 11-14 minutes (conducted face-to-face or via video call)

The IELTS on computer test does not allow extra time to transfer answers, which is why time management becomes more critical. Here are some strategies to help you manage each section a little better:    Listening: Stay focused and move quickly

  • Preview the questions: Before recording begins, skim the questions to know what to listen for

  • Answer while listening: Jot down answers and transfer them later. Remember, you must type directly into the system

  • Avoid getting stuck: If you miss an answer, move on quickly; dwelling on one question can cost you valuable time

  • Use the 2-minute review time: At the end, check for spelling errors or incomplete answers.

  Reading: Pacing and skimming

  • Divide your time: There are three passages with 40 questions. Allocate 15 minutes for the first passage, 20 minutes for the second, and 25 minutes for the third (usually the most difficult)

  • Skim and read selectively: Skim the passage for an overview, then scan for specific details when answering questions

  • Use the highlighter: IELTS on Computer allows you to highlight text. Use this to mark key points and references

  • Answer first, review later: If unsure, mark an answer and come back later instead of spending too long on one question.

  Writing: Plan before you type

  • Task 1: Spend 20 minutes. Quickly analyse the graph, chart, or diagram, then spend 3-5 minutes planning the structure. Write concisely but ensure clarity.

  • Task 2: Spend 40 minutes. Take 5 minutes to plan your essay (intro, main points, conclusion). Write efficiently, ensuring your argument is well-structured. Keep 3-5 minutes at the end to proofread and correct grammar or typing mistakes.

  Speaking: Think before you speak

  • Practice with a timer: Simulate exam conditions by answering common IELTS questions in one minute

  • Don’t rush: Speak at a natural pace to avoid mistakes and ensure clarity

  • Use pauses wisely: If you need to think, pause briefly rather than using fillers like “um” or “uh.

Multiple-Choice Questions and Typing Strategies

When it comes to multiple-choice questions, try and eliminate wrong answers first: Narrow down choices before selecting the correct one. Also, look for synonyms: The wording in the passage may differ from the options, so identify paraphrased terms. Finally, don’t spend too long on one question. If you are unsure, take a best guess and move forward.

As for typing strategies, use keyboard shortcuts: Familiarise yourself with basic shortcuts like Ctrl + C (copy), Ctrl + V (paste), and Ctrl + Z (undo) to save time. Always be mindful of spelling and punctuation. The IELTS on Computer does not auto-correct mistakes, so accuracy is key.
