A Canada student visa, also known as a study permit, is a document issued by Immigration, Refugees, and Citizenship Canada (IRCC) that allows international students to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) in Canada. The study permit is not a visa itself but is required for any program of study longer than six months. Along with your study permit, you may also need a visitor visa or an Electronic Travel Authorization (ETA) depending on your nationality.  

You need a study permit if your course of study in Canada is longer than six months. Even if your course is shorter, a study permit is required if you intend to continue your studies in Canada by enrolling in another program after completing the initial one. It is important to understand that while the study permit allows you to study in Canada, it is separate from the visa that permits you to enter Canada. For many students, a visitor visa or ETA will also be necessary. 

Before you begin your study permit application for Canada, make sure you have the following essential documents:  

• Acceptance Letter: You must have an acceptance letter from a recognized Canadian educational institution, which is crucial for your application. This letter confirms your enrollment in a designated learning institution.  

• Valid Passport: Your passport must be valid for the entire duration of your stay in Canada. It is a critical document for both the visa and study permit.  

• Proof of Funds: You need to prove that you can financially support yourself and any family members who accompany you. This includes covering tuition fees, living expenses, and return transportation. Accepted proof includes bank statements, documentation of a student loan, and proof of payment for tuition and accommodation. The amount of funds you need to demonstrate varies. According to the IRCC, for 2024, a single applicant studying outside Quebec will need to show they have $20,635 (CAD), in addition to their first year of tuition and travel costs. 

1. Application Form  

• You’ll start by filling out the study permit application form on the IRCC website. This form requires you to provide personal details, information about your intended study program, and proof of financial support. It is important to ensure that all the information you provide is accurate and complete to avoid delays in processing.  

2. Processing Time  

• The processing time for a Canada student visa can vary. Applying early is crucial to avoid any delays and ensure you receive your study permit before your program begins.  

3. Study Permit Application Fee  

• The application fee for a study permit is $150 (CAD). In addition to this, if you are required to provide biometrics, there is an additional fee of $85 (CAD) for one person or $170 (CAD) for a family. These fees are non-refundable, so make sure your application is complete and accurate before submission. Also, check the IRCC website regularly for updates. 

4. Checklist  

• The IRCC website will provide you with a personalized checklist based on your specific circumstances. This checklist will outline all the required documents you need to submit with your application. Make sure to follow the checklist carefully to avoid missing any important documents, which could delay the processing of your application.  

5. Proof of Funds 

• As already mentioned above, proving that you have sufficient funds to support yourself during your stay in Canada is a critical part of your study visa application. The exact amount of funds you need to demonstrate depends on your program's length and where you will be studying.  

6. Submit Your Application 

• Once you have completed the form and gathered all necessary documents, submit your student visa application online through the IRCC website.  

7. Obtain Your Study Permit  

• After your application is approved, you will receive a Port of Entry (POE) Letter of Introduction. This letter is not your study permit but serves as proof of approval. When you arrive in Canada, you need to present this letter, along with your passport and other relevant documents, to the Canada Border Services Agency (CBSA). The CBSA officer will then issue your study permit, allowing you to begin your studies in Canada. 

Depending on the provincial guidelines and your specific circumstances, additional documents may be required:  

• Medical Examination: A medical exam may be required based on your country of origin or the duration of your stay in Canada. This is to ensure that you are in good health and do not pose a public health risk.  

• Police Clearance Certificate: This certificate may be required to show that you have no criminal record and are not a security risk to Canada.  

• Statement of Purpose (SOP): In this document, you must explain your academic goals, post-study plans, and reasons for choosing your course and Canadian educational institution. It is also used to demonstrate that you understand your responsibilities as a student in Canada.  

• Biometrics: As part of the study visa process, you may be required to provide biometrics, including fingerprints and a photograph. This is an additional security measure to confirm your identity.  

• Québec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ): If you plan to study in Québec, a CAQ is necessary. This certificate is issued by the Gouvernement du Québec and is required for any study program longer than six months in Québec. The process for obtaining a CAQ involves submitting an application to the ministère de l’Immigration, de la Francisation et de l’Intégration (MIFI). If your CAQ application is approved but you are still waiting for the official certificate, you can apply for your study permit with the approval letter from MIFI.  

How much money do I need to show for a study permit in Canada?  

• You need to demonstrate that you have enough funds to cover your tuition fees and living expenses for the duration of your studies in Canada. This means showing a minimum of $20,635 (CAD) per year in addition to your tuition costs. The exact amount required depends on the length of your program and where you will be studying.   

How long does it take to process a study permit? 

•  The processing time for a study permit application can vary, but it typically takes up to three months. It is recommended that you apply as early as possible to receive your study permit before your program begins. Keep in mind that additional processing time may be required if you are asked to submit more documents or attend an interview.
