To qualify for a New Zealand work visa and PR, you will need to prove your English language proficiency as part of your application, such as booking an IELTS test.

Getting a PR in New Zealand
If gaining permanent residence is what will fill you with wairua (spirit) and mauri (life essence), you’ll need to hold a resident visa for least 2 years in New Zealand before you can apply.
There are multiple paths you can take to work towards permanent residency.
The first is the academic path when completing your studies in New Zealand, which allows you to gain a post-study work visa, valid for up to 3 years depending on your qualification level. Starting from 16 November 2026, there’s also a new Short-term Graduate Work Visa for 6 months of open work rights.
The second route is through the various work categories such as the skilled migrant and business categories
To study in New Zealand
In order to study in New Zealand, you’ll have to obtain a Fee Paying Student Visa, and submit proof of an offer or confirmation of enrolment from an approved institution.
You’re not required to prove your English proficiency for your student visa application, but it is necessary to get enrolled in a course in a New Zealand institution (an offer of place) beforehand.
This means that attaining an overall IELTS band score of minimum 6.0 is essential for entry to the majority of New Zealand’s universities and courses.
IELTS scores to work and attain New Zealand PR in 2026
1. Post Study Work Visa
If you graduated or completed an eligible qualification from a New Zealand institution, you can apply for a post-study work visa that allows you to stay in New Zealand up to 3 years, and can only be provided once.
You should have completed degrees level 7 or above to qualify for the full 3-year unrestricted visa, as well as non-degrees level 7 or below for up to 1 year of work rights.
There is no need to prove your English proficiency if you have already completed an eligible qualification in New Zealand and demonstrated your English language skills. Additionally, visa eligibility from 16 November 2026 will be updated to include graduates with:
an NZQCF level 7 graduate diploma (completed with full-time study in New Zealand), and
a bachelor’s degree completed in New Zealand or overseas (no time limit on when it was awarded)
This means that if you choose to extend your career options by undertaking graduate studies (with a graduate diploma or Master’s degree), you can apply for a post-study work visa.
Check on the level of English and IELTS score you will need, which varies across education institutes.
With a post-study work visa, you can start working your way up to securing a temporary work visa like an Accredited Employer Work Visa (AEWV) or a Work to Residence visa which grants indefinite stay.
2. Short-term Graduate Work Visa (New!)
Graduate pathways in New Zealand are being expanded.
From 16 November 2026, Immigration New Zealand launches the Short-term Graduate Work Visa, which gives a maximum of 6 months’ open work rights to graduates who do not qualify for the standard Post Study Work Visa.
To be eligible:
You need an NZQCF level 5-7 qualification attained with full-time study for at least 24 weeks in New Zealand
English language, foundation or bridging qualifications are not eligible
You’re not eligible for a Post Study Work Visa
This visa also allows you to transition to an AEWV.
3. Accredited Employer Work Visa
This is the main temporary work visa if you have a job offer from an accredited employer, and lasts up to 5 years depending on the skill level of your job, which is tied to the Australian and New Zealand Standard Classification of Occupations (ANZSCO) list.
Graduating international students in New Zealand may also satisfy the minimum skill requirements which are:
at least 2 years of relevant job experience, or
an NZQCF level 4 or higher qualification
Bachelor’s degree holders can take up a job offer in any field or industry different from the qualification they have received.
4. Skilled Migrant Category Resident Visa
This is a points-based pathway towards permanent residency, especially for those in ANZSCO level 1-3 roles.
For your application to succeed, you must have a job or job offer with an employer approved by immigration, and qualify for a total of 6 skilled resident points across different factors, including:
eligible New Zealand occupational registration (e.g. health and social services sector, law, accountancy)
New Zealand qualification
income from current job or job offer is 1.5 times the 2025 median wage
skilled work experience in New Zealand that matches the median wage threshold depending on the skill level of your job
The visa is also changing from 24 August 2026 to benefit international graduates for those aiming for PR:
2 new pathways to increase residence visa eligibility for those with strong work history (Skilled Work Experience pathway) and trades/technical jobs (Trades and Technician pathway)
Awarding higher points for NZ university-level qualifications and overseas bachelor’s degrees
Reduced skilled NZ work experience needed from 3 years to 2 years
English test results will be valid for 5 years instead of 2 years with an eligible occupational registration
Under the Skilled Migrant Category pathway, you’ll be able to live and work in New Zealand indefinitely and work your way up to applying for a Permanent Resident Visa after 2 years on a resident visa.
You may also need to provide valid English test results: a minimum overall IELTS score of 6.5 from either the IELTS General Training or Academic test. IELTS One Skill Retake is accepted as part of your application.
5. Work to Residence Visa
Once you have worked in a Green List Tier 2 in-demand role in New Zealand for two years, you can apply for residence status under the Green List pathway.
You will need to obtain a minimum IELTS overall score of 6.5 in either the General Training or Academic test. IELTS One Skill Retake is accepted as part of your application.
This resident visa allows you to:
live in New Zealand indefinitely
work in any role for any employer in New Zealand
qualify for a Permanent Resident Visa after 2 years on a resident visa
leave and return to New Zealand as often as you want (within the first two years)
access most publicly funded services
6. Straight to Residence Visa
This residence visa requires you to have a job offer from an accredited employer with a role on Tier 1 of the Green List, and you must be 55 years or younger when you apply.
You will need to obtain a minimum IELTS overall score of 6.5 in either the General Training or Academic test. IELTS One Skill Retake is accepted as part of your application. It is important to note that your test result must be no more than 2 years old at the time of your application.
You enjoy the same benefits as the Work to Residence Visa, including eligibility for the Permanent Resident Visa after at least 2 years holding on to a resident visa.
