Sitting for the test on paper will not be possible after June 27, 2026, as we move towards a faster, more efficient IELTS on Computer.
This change has been implemented because our research tells us that IELTS on Computer offers higher satisfaction to test takers for multiple reasons: it is more convenient, results are available faster, and it offers the option of One Skill Retake.
We are aware that many test takers like handwriting answers, so we are introducing a new option: ‘Writing on Paper.’ This update will allow test takers to personalize their test experience by handwriting their answers to the Writing component on paper if they choose.
All current paper-based test results are not affected and will remain valid until the end of the standard two-year period.
Here's what you need to know:
Last Date for IELTS on Paper: The final date for sitting for the IELTS on Paper in Canada is June 27, 2026.
No Changes to IELTS Format: There are no changes if you book your IELTS on Computer. The content, difficulty, and scoring (0-9 band scale) for both test formats remain identical.
IELTS Speaking Component: The Speaking test continues to remain a face-to-face interview with an examiner, regardless of whether you take the IELTS on paper or computer.
Test Scores and Results: There will be no changes to how each component is assessed.
